Cochrane Nigeria established in 2006 is one of the 16 Cochrane Collaboration Centre Branches around the world. The Cochrane Collaboration is an international not-for-profit and independent organization, dedicated to making up-to-date, accurate information about the effects of healthcare readily available worldwide. It produces and disseminates systematic reviews of healthcare interventions and promotes the search for evidence in the form of clinical trials and other studies of interventions.

🧿 Can fewer injections still protect your vision?

Aflibercept is a treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) — a major cause of blindness in older adults.

🔍 A Cochrane Review compared aflibercept with ranibizumab:
✅ Both drugs improved vision equally well
✅ Few serious side effects were reported
✅ Aflibercept may require fewer injections

💬 What it means: Aflibercept is as effective as current treatments, and possibly more convenient for patients.

👁 Backed by high-quality evidence for vision outcomes, though more research is needed to fully understand side effects.

Can antioxidants help people with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)?

This Cochrane Review, including 26 studies and 1609 participants (from 🇳🇬 Nigeria and 8 other countries), found inconsistent evidence on whether antioxidant supplements improve health outcomes in SCD.

⚠️We’re not confident about the benefits or harms — limited studies, small sample sizes, and methodological concerns mean we still need better evidence.

More high-quality research is needed to guide treatment decisions in SCD care.

What Is a Living Systematic Review (LSR)?
🔁 A continuously updated review that evolves with new evidence.

💡 Why LSRs?
Because timely, trustworthy evidence is essential for clinical decisions, policy, and practice, especially in fast-moving fields like COVID-19, public health, and infectious disease management.

🌍 With advances in:
• Online platforms
• Linked data
• Machine learning
• Growing collaborations and citizen science 🧑🏽‍🔬
…LSRs make living evidence a reality.

How often should you really visit the dentist?

This Cochrane Review finds that for adults, seeing a dentist every 6 months doesn’t offer significant benefits over personalized or even 24-month check-ups in terms of:
✔️ Tooth decay
✔️ Gum disease
✔️ Oral health–related quality of life

📌 In fact, risk-based check-up intervals — where your dentist tailors your visit schedule to your oral health needs — work just as well.

👧🏽👦🏾 But what about children? The evidence is still unclear — more high-quality research is needed.

💬 Bottom line: More frequent isn’t always more effective. Your mouth, your needs, your timeline.

🔬 Can inflammation tests help doctors reduce unnecessary antibiotic use?

Evidence shows that:
• ✅ CRP point-of-care tests probably reduce the number of antibiotic prescriptions in people with airway infections, without affecting recovery.
• ⚠️ There’s not enough evidence yet on procalcitonin tests to know if they help.
🧪 Point-of-care tests use just a few drops of blood and deliver results in minutes, helping guide safer, faster clinical decisions right in the consulting room.
💊 Most airway infections are viral — antibiotics won’t help, and overuse drives antibiotic resistance. Tests like CRP may help doctors avoid unnecessary prescriptions.
📌 More studies are still needed — especially in children, the elderly (80+), and people with weakened immune systems.

Forest Plot 101 — What Do They Show?

Ever seen this in a Cochrane Review and wondered what it means?

Forest plots visually summarize the results of multiple studies and tell us how consistent, precise, and strong the evidence is.

Here’s how to read one:

🔹 Squares = Each study
• Size = study weight
• Horizontal lines = 95% confidence intervals (CI)

🔹 Diamond at the bottom = Combined summary (meta-analysis)
• Width = overall 95% CI

📍 Vertical line at 1.0 = No effect
• Left of line = favors treatment
• Right = favors control
• Crosses 1.0? Not statistically significant

🎯 Narrow CIs = precise evidence
⚠️ Wide CIs = more uncertainty
🔍 And always check for heterogeneity (big differences between studies)!

Breaking Down Stroke Treatments: Which Thrombectomy is Best?

This Cochrane Review compares thrombo-aspiration vs. stent-retriever thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke—but finds no clear difference in safety or effectiveness!

Key Takeaways:
✔ Both methods work similarly for large vessel occlusion strokes.
✔ Combined techniques show promise but need more research.
✔ High-quality evidence, though slight bias possible.
