MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGICAL TECHNIQUES:
Exploring the benefits and advancements in minimally invasive surgical procedures and their impact on patient recovery and outcomes.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques have revolutionized the field of surgery, offering patients a less invasive alternative to traditional open procedures which usually are more painful and a take a longer time to recover from. With advancements in technology and surgical expertise, minimally invasive surgeries have become increasingly common across various medical specialties. These procedures utilize small or no incision at all and specialized instruments, such as endoscopes, laparoscopes and robotic systems, to access and treat internal organs with precision.

One of the primary benefits of minimally invasive surgery is the reduced trauma to surrounding tissues and organs. Unlike open surgeries that require large incisions, minimally invasive procedures result in smaller or no scars, less blood loss, and reduced postoperative pain. As a result, patients experience faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays, allowing them to return to their normal activities sooner.

Moreover, minimally invasive techniques offer improved cosmetic outcomes, as the smaller incisions result in less noticeable scars compared to traditional surgery. This not only enhances patient satisfaction but also contributes to their overall well-being and self-esteem.
In addition to faster recovery and improved aesthetics, minimally invasive surgeries often lead to better clinical outcomes. Studies have shown that patients undergoing minimally invasive procedures experience lower rates of complications, reduced risk of infection, and improved long-term outcomes compared to traditional open surgeries.

From removal of enlarged prostates (HoLEP or TURP), gall bladder stones (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) to cardiac procedures and orthopaedic surgeries, the applications of minimally invasive techniques continue to expand, offering patients safer and more effective treatment options. As technology continues to evolve and surgical expertise advances, minimally invasive surgery will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare, improving patient recovery, and enhancing surgical outcomes.

Addressing Barriers to Surgical Care

Access to surgical care remains a critical issue globally, with millions of people facing barriers that prevent them from receiving timely and essential surgical treatment. Among the primary obstacles are financial constraints, which often prevent individuals from accessing surgical care due to the high costs associated with procedures, hospitalization, and postoperative care. Moreover, many underserved communities lack adequate healthcare infrastructure, including hospitals, surgical facilities, and trained healthcare professionals, further limiting access to surgical services.

Geographical challenges also contribute to disparities in surgical care, particularly in remote and rural areas where healthcare facilities are scarce, and transportation options are limited. Addressing these barriers requires a multifaceted approach that focuses on improving access for underserved individuals/communities.

One strategy involves consciously and precisely increasing investment in healthcare infrastructure, including the construction and equipping of hospitals and surgical centres in remote and underserved areas by our great government as well as well-meaning individuals. Additionally, efforts to train and deploy more healthcare professionals who are (should be) well paid, including surgeons, anaesthetists, and nurses, to these regions are essential to meet the growing demand for surgical care.

Financial assistance programs like Surgical Aid Foundation annual outreach, wealthy individuals, and health insurance schemes can help alleviate the burden of healthcare costs for vulnerable populations, ensuring that individuals can access surgical services without facing financial hardship. Community outreach programs and mobile surgical units can also play a vital role in reaching underserved populations, providing essential surgical care directly to communities in need.

Improving access to surgical care requires a coordinated effort involving governments, healthcare organizations, non-profit organizations, and the private sector. By addressing financial constraints, enhancing healthcare infrastructure, and implementing innovative strategies, we can ensure that all individuals, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status, have access to safe, timely, and high-quality surgical care.

What is PCNL?
Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy

PCNL is a technique used to remove certain stones in the kidney or upper ureter (the tube that drains urine from the kidney to the bladder) that are too large for other forms of stone treatment. Kidney stones are solid crystals formed from the salts in urine. They are sometimes called renal calculi. They can block the flow of urine and cause infection, kidney damage or even kidney failure.

Symptoms include pain in the flank, stomach ache, blood in the urine, nausea, fever and chills, cloudy or smelly urine. Some people have kidney stones and never know because they do not have any symptom. It's crucial to drink enough water so that the kidneys can properly flush out any excess waste materials. The surgery for Kidney stones is performed by making a small 1cm incision in the patient’s flank area. Typically, the duration of the surgery is three to four hours.

PCNL has replaced open surgery for kidney stones in the vast majority of patients. This procedure has resulted in significantly less post-operative pain, a shorter hospital stay, and earlier return to work and daily activities when compared to open stone surgery. This technique also has a higher success rate for clearing all stones in one setting.

The cure is within our borders

Nigerians spend 1 billion dollars yearly on medical tourism (Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority). There are many factors that influence the choice to seek medical care abroad. Some of these factors are a perception that medical care in Nigeria is of “low quality”, the patient’s office pays for their medical trips abroad or patients do not like the attitude of hospital staff in Nigeria. A large number of Nigerians travel for conditions in oncology, orthopaedics, nephrology and cardiology in countries like United States, United Kingdom, India, Germany amongst others.

Risks associated with Medical Tourism

• Flying after surgery can increase the risk of blood clots

• Difficulty in following up with the surgeons after returning home
