I am extremely grateful to my very dear brother, Chief Engr.Owen Chamberlain Obaseki JP, for his very humbling birthday tribute (reproduced below).
As I celebrate my new age, I pray God to bless each and everyone of us. May joy, good health and progress remain our portion.
To God be the glory!!!

*TO DR.OSAHON ENABULELE AT 53.*

Where do you begin to celebrate a man who already became golden before the golden age of fifty? Where do you begin? A proud and erudite son of the Benin soil but, undoubtedly, an international personality who has traversed the globe and sown potent seeds in medical leadership terrains internationally.

Fifty-three years ago, when this enigma gained humble nativity, even Shakespeare’s three witches in Macbeth may have been unable to “look into the sands of time and say which grain will grow and which grain will not.”

Primary school in Benin, secondary school in FGC Wukari, Taraba State, and medical education at the prestigious University of Benin, Dr. Enabulele, fondly called the “lion killer” because of his resolute moral courage, has built for himself a gazebo of accomplishments that even an enemy would be proud of.

His resumé resembles the combined honours of three who’s who in the African medical world. And most of these he had accomplished even before he turned 40. What would you say about a man who cut his teeth in politics by winning the enviable position of President, University of Benin Medical Students Association as a medical student where he served from 1992 to 1994? From then, there was no stopping the "lion killer."

As Chairman, Edo state branch of Nigerian Medical Association, 2008 to 2010 and then President, Nigerian Medical Association, 2012 to 2014, his state and national status was firmly established. His international journey was launched in grand style as he became President, Commonwealth Medical Association, breaking a record by becoming the first Nigerian ever to be so elected President since the body was formed in November 1962! He was to become Coordinator, Coalition of African National Medical Associations (CANMA), made up of all National Medical Associations in the African region. Yet, he was not done.

It is important to note that Dr. Osahon Enabulele is the first Nigerian to ever sit on the Executive Committee of the World Medical Association since its inception in 1947. He is the first Nigerian ever to be elected Chairman, Socio-Medical Affairs Committee of the World Medical Association and a pioneer member of the Policy Review Committee of the same World Medical Association. He is also the very first West African to become the President of the *WORLD MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, WMA 1*

We celebrate a maestro, Chief Consultant Family Physician, UBTH; Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) ; Life Member, Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON) and World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA).

You are indeed my hero, mentor and, undoubtedly, my Edo man of the decade. I salute your excellence. In this age when mediocrity is celebrated, mere wealth worshipped and political patronage elevated above excellence and merit, I derive uncommon joy from your unblemished records and wish more people would tow this line of recognising genuine quality accomplishments among us.

You are a citizen of the world by all standards and an amazing repertoire of knowledge and wisdom. We wish you more laurels as you enjoy your post-golden age existence. We are proud of the heritage you are establishing through your beautiful family comprising the lovely Professor (Mrs) Joan Enabulele, your precious wife, and your lovely children. We are proud that you are proudly Benin and we see in you an inspiration for young Benin professionals. You model, in the words of British poet Rudyard Kipling, the ability to “talk with crowds and keep your virtue” to “walk with Kings” and not “lose the common touch”.

Keep winning Sir.

Proudly celebrated by
Chief Engr.

*CHANGE OF BATON TAKES PLACE IN THE DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY MEDICINE,UBTH* .

Today,11th of January,2019 marked another important day in the life of our UBTH Department of Family Medicine,as I handed over the baton of headship of the Department to another Consultant Family Physician,Dr.Joseph Ajokpaniovo, having completed my two year tenure (10th January,2017-10th January,2019) as Head of Department (HOD).
The colourful transition exercise which also witnessed the official launch of the maiden edition of the Department's Newsletter, " *The Astute Family Physician* ", took place in the morning of today in the seminar room of the new Administrative building of the Department.

I must state that despite the existential challenges of very poor financial support, human resource deficits, infrastructural, equipment and other workplace deficits,It has been two (2) years of constructive engagement and progressive reengineering, with lots of positive manifestations and modest collective attainments, as detailed in my valedictory address.

*However, for the purpose of this brief note, some of our significant attainments, amongst many others, include* :

(i)Development of a collective strategic plan with strategic vision and mission statements and performance targets in January 2017;

(ii) Strengthening of the Department's Residency Training Programme with visible improvement in the pass rate of Residents at the Postgraduate Membership exams from 14% in the 5yrs preceding my appointment to 100% during my tenure;

(iii) Increase in the number of Senior Registrars from an average production of 1-2 per year in the 5yrs preceding my appointment as Head of Department to a phenomenal production of 10 Senior Registrars under 15months of my tenure as Head of Department;

(iv) Improved Welfare packages for Residents and Staff.

(v) Sustained Service Delivery in the General Practice Clinic, NHIS/Staff Clinic, and NYSC Camp Clinic.

(vi) Approval and Establishment of an Academic Department of Family Medicine in the University of Benin.

With this historic development, the Department is set to commence delivery of Family Medicine courses to undergraduate medical students of the University of Benin.

(vii)Improved Harmony and Team spirit amongst Staff, with improved Staff performance and productivity.

(viii) Formal movement to the Department's new Administrative building.

We remain grateful to the immediate past CMD of UBTH,Prof.Michael Ibadin, for fulfilling his promise to deliver to the Department this new Administrative building.
The building was formally commissioned on June 12, 2017 by the Minister of Health,Prof.Isaac Adewole.

We successfully acquired a 288 KVA CAT Generator (though an old one) to provide an alternative source of power supply to the building.

While awaiting the release of funds to facilitate the wiring of the generator to power the building,we are thankful to the current UBTH Management for this provision.

(ix) Production of the maiden edition of the Department's Newsletter, "The Astute Family Physician".

(x) Successful initiation and organization of the very 1st and novel Annual Staff Productivity and Performance Reward Day which was held on Friday,22nd December,2017 and chaired by my good friend and brother,Hon.Patrick Obahiagbon.
The 2nd edition was also successfully held on Friday,28th December,2018.

The Annual Staff Productivity and Performance Reward Day (which has been renamed Dr.Jeffery Omoregie Annual Staff Productivity and Performance Reward Day, in honour of one of our Residents/Registrars who kicked the bucket on 21st November,2018), is now one of the flagship programmes of the Department.

(xi)Successful initiation and organization of the 1st Iconic Personality Lecture series on Wednesday,19th December,2018.

(xii) Organization of Capacity Building Workshop for Family Physicians, Residents and other categories of medical doctors in the Department.
An impactful Capacity Building Workshop on " *Orthopaedics and Trauma Management in the frontline* " with external and internal resource persons offering their expertise, was held on Saturday, 22nd December, 2018.

*APPRECIATION*

I thank our almighty creator for his ever abiding grace, protection and blessings.

I am grateful to my wife and family for their patience, understanding and support.

I thank the immediate past Chief Medical Director of UBTH,Prof.Michael Ibadin, for offering me the appointment in the first instance.

I also thank the current CMD,Prof.Darlington Obaseki, for finding time to grace most of our significant activities and for the ongoing efforts to reintroduce Electronic Health Record System in our General Practice Clinic, along with promise of some renovation work in the General Practice Clinic.

I remain thankful to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (Prof.Faraday Osasere Orumwense) and his team, including the immediate past and current Provost of the College of Medical Sciences (Provost Vincent Iyawe and Prof.Efosa Oviasu),and all other votaries of our specialty, for supporting our quest to have a Department of Family Medicine established in the University of Benin.

I thank all our medical elders (Dr.Danny Odemwingie Ogbeide, Dr.Ehimatie Obazee, Dr. (Mrs) A.R.Kubeyinje, and Dr.Damien.D.Uyagu) for their sustained support during my tenure.

I am profoundly grateful to my colleagues, fellow Family Physicians,Resident Doctors, Unit Heads and the entire Staff of the Department,as well as friends of the Department for zestfully supporting me in our determination to strategically reposition the Department for improved service delivery, improved Staff and patient satisfaction, and improved Staff performance and productivity.

I thank them for all their prayers, advice, encouragement and immense support which they offered me during my tenure as HOD.

I am convinced that we came, we saw, we strategized and organized for progressive change, and we collectively achieved.

I humbly urge that same support be extended to my successor in office.

I pray for attainment of greater heights by the newly appointed Head of Department, to the glory of our Department and our Family Medicine specialty,as well as the overall growth of our hospital and the health care delivery system in Edo State and our country, Nigeria.

May God continue to comfort and strengthen the families of our departed colleagues and Staff, particularly Dr.Jeffery Osakioduwa Omoregie, and grant the great souls of our departed colleagues and other faithful departed, eternal repose.

To God be all the glory!!!

*GOING BACK TO OUR ROOTS* !!!

In an effort to ensure we continuously tap from the wisdom and counsel of our Elders, and to also appreciate them for their various contributions to the growth and development of our Department of Family Medicine,UBTH,I recently led a delegation to specially visit our Elders in Benin City; Dr.Danny Odemwingie Ogbeide, Dr.Matie Ehimatie Obazee,Dr (Mrs) A.R.Kubeyinje,and Dr.Damien.D.Uyagu, all of whom we happily found in very effervescent states.

*HAPPY NEW YEAR FELICITATIONS TO STAFF OF UBTH FAMILY MEDICINE DEPARTMENT!!!*

Most esteemed colleagues, comrades, staff and Unit Heads of our Department of Family Medicine,

I humbly extend to you my warm fraternal felicitations as we celebrate the dawn of a potentially pregnant and refreshing new year, 2019.

I thank our almighty creator for his grace upon our lives and those of our families and loved ones.

I congratulate all of us for triumphantly making it into the New Year, 2019, and for our individual and collective attainments in the outgone year, 2018.

May the souls of those who left us in 2018 and many other faithful departed continue to rest peacefully in the bosom of our creator.

Undoubtedly, the out gone year (2018) was one laced with some vicissitudes and challenges in our Department, and indeed, the entire hospital (UBTH), but I am glad we rose up to these challenges and never allowed them to supplant our individual and collective Departmental dreams and vision.

I remain profoundly grateful to you all for your uncommon commitment, courage and resolve to address all the challenges that confronted us, even within the constraining work environment under which we worked, in the outgone year 2018.
I am glad to note that in very many areas we recorded outstanding successes, to the glory of our creator, our Department, hospital, and our patients/clients whom we serve.

Notwithstanding the successes achieved in the outgone year, it is a luminous fact that some existential challenges with great impact on clinical service delivery, work place environment/infrastructure, human resource for health/personnel, amongst others, still remain to be sincerely confronted.

I am however convinced that with sincere commitment by all, team work, inspirational and ingenious leadership, these challenges can be successful addressed and consigned to the dustbin of history.
I therefore call on everyone to brace up for the great task which still lies ahead in this new year, 2019.

As we look forward to an exciting 2019, let’s continuously work in ways that command the trust, respect and confidence of our patients/clients whom we are meant to efficiently, effectively and humanely serve.

May the year 2019 be much more fulfilling for us, our Department, our hospital (UBTH), our state, country, and our homes and respective families.

May we witness sustained peace, blessings and phenomenal progress in our endeavours in the new year and beyond.

Thank you and God bless.

HAPPY 2019!!!

*THE PAINFUL EXIT OF DR.JEFF OMOREGIE!!!*

It is with a heavy heart and great pains that i announce, on behalf of the UBTH Department of Family Medicine, the very sad and untimely demise of one of our most affable, congenial and brilliant Resident doctors in our Department,Dr.Jeff Omoregie, who passed on yesterday,21st November,2018.

Though we are not in a position to question our creator over some admittedly arcane life events,I must however admit that this is one death that has truly devasted us.We are all deeply pained and extremely melancholic over the very unfortunate loss of our dear colleague.

Dr.Jeff Omoregie was unarguably one of our best Resident doctors in our Department, with uncommon diligence and dedication to duty, great passion for excellence and profound scholarship.

Despite his upbringing and alluring potentials and attainments,Dr.Jeff was an epitome of humility. He was simplicity personified and an archetypal medical doctor.

Only last week when we visited him at his family home,he was very mirthful and showed great promise of survival that inspired great hope in us.

Even in his last days on this terrestrial plane, he exhibited uncommon courage and determination to overcome laced with radiant smiles that gave us great hope that he had passed through his darkest moments.

We plead with everyone to join us in fervent prayers for his family, parents and loved ones. They need all our prayers and support at this truly difficult period of bereavement.

Yes,Jeff may have transited to eternal celestial glory, his memories and legacies shall surely live on.

As a Department,we are committed to sustaining and promoting his non pareil virtues and legacies.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family and parents, friends and loved ones. We pray God to comfort them and everyone of us.

Jeff, despite your brief sojourn with us,we are consoled that you danced very well on life's important stages during your terrestrial per-egrination.

May our almighty creator grant your very gentle and great soul eternal repose.

Adieu our uncommon Family Physician!
Adieu our affable, congenial and quintessential medical doctor!!
Adieu our great brother!!!

Sleep on until we meet again to part no more.
