Restoring Sight For Less Than US$100

For over 10 years, Norfolk Church of Christ in Norfolk, Virginia and the Use Offot Church of Christ in Uyo, Nigeria have worked together to reduce human suffering in Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria. The collaboration consists of the church in Norfolk providing funding, and the church in Uyo selecting and developing projects within the very broad scope requested by the Norfolk church.

At the outset of the collaboration, the Uyo church was asked to select and develop projects to aid orphans. The principal project selected and operated by the Uyo church to assist orphans has been an apprenticeship program, which each year trains 10 to 20 orphans in their late teens to support themselves as young adults using the skills learned through serving as apprentices in various trades.

Over the past decade, the capabilities of the AtMyGate volunteers in Nigeria have increased, and new projects have been identified. Donations were received in early 2019 by the church in Norfolk that were earmarked to reverse blindness by the surgical removal of cataracts. The AtMyGate volunteers in Uyo therefore organized a three day eye clinic at a local hospital, where over 500 patients were evaluated. Around 20 underwent cataract removal surgery and many others received less invasive treatments for their eye conditions.

The purpose of this Page is to tell the story of how people who have lost their eyesight due to cataracts, and who have thereby become dependent on others, can again become sighted, functioning family members at a cost of less than USD100. This Page is a means of sharing the opportunity to deliver the miracle of restored vision to those who have a desire to relieve human suffering in one of the most effective ways possible.
