An Open Letter to Comrades:
INSTEAD OF SEEKING POSITIONS, BUILD YOUR CAPACITY.
Dear Comrades,
In our shared journey toward societal transformation, we often encounter the temptation of seeking positions of authority and influence. It is an understandable inclination; after all, positions come with visibility, status, and, in many cases, the power to effect change. However, I urge you today to reconsider this approach. Let us shift our focus from chasing positions to building our capacity.
The essence of leadership is not confined to titles or offices. True leadership is rooted in the ability to inspire, to solve problems, and to serve with excellence. These qualities do not emanate from positions but from the continuous development of skills, knowledge, and character.
WHY CAPACITY BUILDING MATTERS.
1. COMPETENCE PRECEDES AUTHORITY.
Positions can be granted, but competence must be earned. Without the necessary skills and knowledge, holding a position may only expose one’s inadequacies. On the other hand, a well-equipped individual can lead and influence even without a formal title.
2. SUSTAINABILITY IN LEADERSHIP.
Capacity building ensures that when opportunities arise, you are prepared to step in and deliver. It is not enough to attain a position; sustaining it requires a depth of understanding and the ability to adapt to challenges.
3. IMPACT BEYOND TITLES.
History is replete with examples of individuals who made significant contributions without holding formal positions. Their impact was a result of their capacity to think critically, act decisively, and inspire others. You too can effect change in your community by becoming a person of value, irrespective of your title.
4. EMPOWERMENT OF OTHERS.
As you build your capacity, you become a resource for others. You create a ripple effect, empowering those around you to grow and develop. This collective strength is what drives sustainable progress.
HOW TO BUILD CAPACITY
1. INVEST IN LEARNING;
Knowledge is power. Continuously seek opportunities to learn—be it through formal education, workshops, or self-study. Stay informed about developments in your field and beyond.
2. DEVELOP CRITICAL SKILLS;
Identify the skills necessary for the impact you want to make. Whether it’s public speaking, negotiation, or strategic planning, dedicate time to honing these abilities.
3. CULTIVATE EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE;
Effective leadership is not just about intellect; it’s also about understanding and managing emotions—both your own and those of others. Empathy, resilience, and communication are key to fostering strong relationships.
4. ENGAGE IN SERVICE;
True capacity building happens through action. Volunteer, take on responsibilities, and seek out challenges. Every experience is an opportunity to grow and refine your abilities.
Finally ! Comrades, positions are fleeting, but the value you bring through your capacity is enduring. By focusing on self-improvement and service, you will not only position yourself for leadership but also inspire others to follow your example. Together, let us strive to be leaders of substance, not just leaders of title.
Yours in solidarity,
Comr. Akanimo Ifiokobong (CONC)
