MALARIA AND THE NIGERIA ECONOMY

Nigeria contributes a quarter of malaria burden in Africa where over 90% of the population are at risk. 50% of the population will have at least one attack per year.

It is responsible for about 67% of all clinic attendance and is d commonest cause of absenteeism from offices, farms, markets, schools, etc. Malaria accounts for 30% childhood mortality, 11% maternal mortality, and reduces by 1% Nigeria's GDP annually.

About 3 billion USD is lost annually. This could pay the annual salary of 2.2 million Nigerians as minimum wage.
