This Eating Habit Can Help You Sleep Better, New Study Suggests
Clara Olshansky

If you're struggling with sleep quality, you may have already tried some of the most common suggestions out there—sticking to a regular sleep schedule, putting your phone away well before you close your eyes, and getting enough exercise. While these are all helpful tips with valid science behind them, you may be finding that they're not enough on their own. If you're looking for another change to help improve your sleep quality, consider taking a look at the foods you eat.
While we've known for a long time that dietary choices are linked to sleep quality, new research finds that one specific eating habit, following the Mediterranean diet, can especially help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep through the night. The new study, published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, reviewed twenty previous studies published between 1975 and 2021 to compare diet composition to sleep quality. Researchers highlighted the Mediterranean diet as one that contained the main qualities linked with better sleep quality.
"It seems that those who eat more fiber, healthier fats (such as polyunsaturated fats), serotonin- and melatonin-rich fruits and vegetables, and anti-inflammatory nutrients (such as antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids) have better sleep," study author Katherine Wilson tells Eat This, Not That! of the results. "But, more studies are needed to explain what drives these associations."
Wilson adds that a range of other habits, including limiting caffeine intake and screen use, could also help with sleep quality and that it varies from person to person, "almost like your fingerprint."
Even when it comes to your dietary choices, it's worth taking a more 360-degree view. So, if one particular habit change doesn't work for you, it's worth trying some other things out until you find the routine that works best for you.
"One thing that many people have difficulty understanding about the connection between food and sleep is that the existing data suggest that it is less about specific foods and more about overall eating patterns," says Michael A. Grandner, PhD, MTR, author of Sleep and Health.
"Taken together, the evidence suggests that overall healthy eating patterns, especially those that provide sufficient nutritional balance with most of the caloric intake focused more in the middle of the day, may be more beneficial to sleep health. Worrying about individual foods and nutrients may be missing the big picture."

Gunshots, chaos as EFCC operatives allegedly storm APC ex-governor's hotel

• There are claims that EFCC officials were at the hotel of Gbenga Daniel on Saturday, November 27, to arrest an internet fraudster
• The presence of the operatives and their alleged activities at the facility were confirmed by the media aide to the former Ogun governor, Steve Oliyide
• However, the agency in Lagos and Oyo states has stated that it knew nothing about the development
Abeokuta, Ogun - There was confusion and fear at the Conference Hotel belonging to Gbenga Daniel, the former governor of Ogun state as operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) allegedly went in search of an internet fraudster at the facility on Saturday, November 27.
Eyewitnesses told Daily Trust that the operatives who stormed one of the halls in the hotel released gunshots which triggered serious fear among attendees of a ceremony at the hall.
It was gathered that during the search, some cybercriminals otherwise called Yahoo boys were arrested by agents of the anti-graft body.
Meanwhile, the agency is yet to confirm the development as the spokespersons of the Ibadan and Lagos zonal offices denied knowledge of it.
However, the media aide to the former governor, Steve Oliyide, claimed that the report was true.
Oliyide said:
“Around 2:00am on Sunday 28th November 2021, some unknown gunmen believed to be acting at the behest of one of the Anti-graft agencies stormed the premises of the hotel facility in Abeokuta in search of an unknown yahoo boy.
“Unnecessary shots were fired and our innocent guests were scared. Thankfully, our various security agencies were able to restore law and order and no life was lost.”

Celebrity moms who embrace being a single parent
Being a parent is no joke, and it's even harder when you're doing it alone. Despite the modern times we live in, there's still some stigma around being a single woman raising a child. Many Hollywood stars have taken on the challenge of being a single mother by choice, while others are just dealing with unexpected circumstances. Either way, they're showing the world that you can still be successful while raising kids without the support of a partner. They're also making it clear that it's not easy and that single parents deserve some serious appreciation!

Nigerian man sentenced in fraud scheme that targeted women

A federal judge in Pennsylvania has sentenced a Nigerian man to more than seven years in prison for conspiring to launder approximately $1.89 million in mail and wire fraud proceeds in a scheme that targeted women.
Jabin Okpako, 36, and his wife, Christine Bradley Okpako, 54, of Sayre, Pennsylvania, transferred the funds out of the United States to three separate bank accounts in Nigeria, prosecutors said.
Authorities said the couple targeted women, ranging in age from 55 to 85, who visited online game, relationship and dating websites. After cultivating online relationships, the pair induced the women to send money for fictitious reasons, prosecutors said.
According to prosecutors, the fictitious purposes included to help a worker in Alaska who fell from a tower, to aid the United Nations and to recover a $6 million inheritance.
The judge ordered Jabin Okpako to make restitution in the amount of $440,950 and to forfeit proceeds of the criminal activity.
His wife pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to commit money laundering through mail and wire fraud and is awaiting sentencing.
