ABU delegation visits AMA Pharmaceutical firm to strengthen partnership

A delegation from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, has visited AMA Medical Manufacturing Ltd.

The visit was to enhance a strategic partnership between AMA Medical and Ahmadu Bello University in order to advance the development of healthcare products through collaborative research, innovation and commercial production.

Receiving the delegation, the founder of AMA Medical Manufacturing Ltd, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa Bello, thanked the delegation for the visit.

Alhaji Musa stated that he was excited about the collaboration with ABU, stressing that the university means a lot to them.

The founder said since they started they were competing against something inferior in terms of quality.

According to him, in Northern Nigeria, there was absolutely nothing in terms of drug production, as such, one would have to transport from Lagos and Port Harcourt.

He said as a way of giving back to the society, he had been to so many states in Nigeria for cataract operations and distribution of reading glasses, saying that testimonies from patients who have been successfully operated give him joy.

Musa expressed happiness to have the ABU team on board as they know more than they do.

Also speaking, the Chairman, AMA Medical Manufacturing Ltd, Prof Abdulsalami Nasidi, OON said they decided to bring the initiative to put Northern Nigeria on the map.

Prof Nasidi said the main objective of the partnership is from research to full scale commercialization.

He said they started by commissioning the ABU Science and Technology Incubation hub last January by the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, which would offer opportunities for students to excel in learning and research.

Prof Nasidi asserted that he had visited seven medical facilities in India and that all of them had partnerships with local universities.

The Chairman also said all their products underwent detailed scrutiny by the National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration Control (NAFDAC), making them of international standard.

There was a presentation on the company's unique selling points by the Superintendent Pharmacist, AMA Medical Manufacturing, Pharm. Olushola Olawale.

Olawale explained that AMA was not only bringing technology to Nigeria and Africa, but also working with polypropylene film, ports, caps and anti counterfeit features, which ensures crystal clear transparency and it is mechanically rugged.

He said the sterility assurance level of their facilities is 99.99%, and that it sterilized at 121 degrees celsius for 20 minutes.

The Superintendent Pharmacist said they are convenient in terms of administration, easier and less troublesome.

In a closing remark, the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, thanked the founder for activating the process of the partnership.

Prof Ahmed said at 63, the university had stayed for too long in the laboratory, therefore, it is time to go to the market.

The Vice-Chancellor assured the management of AMA Medical Manufacturing Ltd of the team's commitment, stressing that ABU must step up in this kind of relationship.

He appreciated the significant support of Alhaji Musa towards the success of the university's 45th convocation ceremony.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that hosting three World Bank Centres showed that the university has the capacity to excel.

According to Ahmed, AMA Medical Manufacturing Ltd has the capacity to excel with the kind of facilities on ground and that AMA needs ABU as much as ABU needs AMA.

He lauded the foresight of the founder and prayed for more visionary Nigerians like him.

Members of the delegation included Centre Leader, Africa Centre of Excellence on Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology, Prof Y K E Ibrahim; Deputy Centre Leader, Prof Musa Maman; Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), ABU Teaching Hospital, Shika, Prof Mohammed Aminu Balarabe; and Director, Directorate of Advancement and International Education, Prof M I Umar-Buratai.

Others were Director, University Health Services, Prof Mohammed Dauda Maigatari; Director, Directorate of Research and Innovation, Prof J J Maina; Director Venom, Anti Venom Toxins Research, Prof Nuhu Mohammed Danjuma and Prof M S Abubakar of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Drug Development.

They also included Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Auwalu Umar; Dean Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Prof Mohammed Magaji and Public Affairs Directorate's Senior Information and Protocol Officer, Ahmad Haruna Waziri.

ABU should lead in tackling out of school children menace - Rochas Okorocha

Ahmadu Bello University should lead in tackling the menace of out of school children in the North as the institution has the capacity to change the narrative.

The President, Rochas Foundation, His Excellency, Senator Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha, made the call when the institution's Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, visited him in Abuja last week.

Okorocha, former Governor of Imo State, believed that the university and his foundation could jointly collaborate to deal with the situation.

The former governor explained that of the over 20 million out of school children in Nigeria, 70 percent were from the North.

He said part of the scope of his foundation was to address the threat by targetting the orphans and children from the poor background.

Senator Okorocha stated that the foundation established three different classes with indigenous blend for wider acceptance.

The former governor listed the classes as follows: Ahmadu Bello Class, Tafawa Balewa Class and Aminu Kano Class.

He appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and members of his team immensely for the visit and declared that the foundation would collaborate with the university to improve learning, teaching, and research.

Senator Okorocha said the best way to go as a university was to embrace private-sector partnership to raise the needed financial strength for smooth operations.

He advised that the university could take advantage of its large expanse of land to engage in different agric businesses.

The former governor assured the Vice-Chancellor of his readiness to link up the university with strong financial institutions that would guide them in the area of revenue generation.

The Director-General of Rochas Foundation, Ucy Rochas, spoke briefly about the activities of the foundation.

She described the visit as timely, stressing that Ahmadu Bello University is going to be an important partner in providing quality education to the less privileged.

The Vice-Chancellor had earlier told the former governor that the university appreciated him for the passion he has for education, leading to the establishment of Rochas Foundation.

Prof Ahmed said ABU is all out to retain its position as one of the leading universities in Africa, saying that the institution is now trying to take its research products for commercialization.

He briefed the politician on the success the university recorded in organising its 45th convocation which was held on Saturday, 31st 2026.

The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied on the visit to former governor by the Director, Directorate of Advancement and International Education, Prof M I Umar-Buratai.

Others were the Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Auwalu Umar; and Assistant Director, Advancement, Dr Ahmed Zakaria.

ABU, NIRSAL plan partnership for commercial agriculture

Ahmadu Bello University and the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) are planning for a partnership for viable commercial agriculture.

This followed a meeting of heads of both organisations in Abuja last week at which they signified intentions to build strong partnership for agric business.

ABU has a huge agric complex like no other in any Nigerian university while NIRSAL is a financial institution designed to redefine, dimension, measure, re-price and share agribusiness-related credit risk with financiers and investors.

The university is expecting a team of experts from NIRSAL who will assess ABU agricultural potential for the partnership.

At the meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, 4th March, 2026, the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, said ABU appreciated the enormous work NIRSAL was doing in the area of finance and investment in the agricultural sector.

He praised the effort of the Hon. Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Mukhtar Idi Maiha, for recommending NIRSAL as a right partner for the university to successfully engage in commercial agriculture.

Prof Ahmed, who empathized ABU's readiness for the partnership, explained that the university has a huge agric complex and a microfinance bank that could ease the partnership.

The Vice-Chancellor fingered the institution's National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) as the right place in ABU where the agric business would eventually be run.

"The research carried out on ShikaBrown by scientists at NAPRI is indeed a landmark achievement. But taking the project to the market remains a tedious task", he said.

One of the NAPRI mandates, according to him, was to produce milk for the entire West Africa.

"So we need to invest so that the institute can produce all milk needed in the area. This is by way of making it a business venture", he also said.

NIRSAL Managing Director Sa'ad Hamidu stated that there must be a business case wherever they stepped in.

Hamidu expressed NIRSAL's readiness to partner with the university, assuring that they would look at how they could bring experts and finance the project.

"And we need to, first and foremost, visit the project site to do the scoping", according to him.

The Managing Director also stressed that there has to be a business partnership before going into agreement.

NIRSAL's relevant heads of unit were at the meeting co-chaired by the Managing Director and the Vice-Chancellor.

The Director, Directorate of Advancement and International Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Muhammad Inuwa Umar-Buratai, was present at the meeting.

Others at the meeting from Ahmadu Bello University were Director, Public Affairs, Auwalu Umar; and Assistant Director, Advancement, Dr Ahmed Zakaria.

NIRSAL is a non-banking financial institution and a wholly-owned corporation of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

It was primarily established to stimulate the flow of affordable investments into the agriculture sector by de-risking the agribusiness finance value chain.

The string art ABU presented to Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

High point of the visit to Ahmadu Bello University by Dr Ngozi Okonja-Iweala to deliver a pre-convocation lecture was the presentation to the distinguished economist of a string art made of her soon after the lecture.

String art is an art form that uses thread stretched across evenly spaced nails to create geometric patterns and eventually detailed images.

In the artwork, which is also called 'pin and thread art', the image of Okonjo-Iweala emerged purely from straight-line geometry.

Okonjo-Iweala was highly excited for the gift which she described as "special and extraordinary".

The string art made of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was created using 230 evenly spaced nails, about 2.3 kilometers of thread, and over 25 hours of stringing.

It was Abdulmalik Ibrahim who did the pin and thread art. And amazingly, the 400 Level student is from the Department of Computer Science, and not Fine Art as many would expect.

In carrying out the artwork, the student first mapped 230 nails evenly around a circular board to ensure symmetry. Then, he used the algorithm-generated sequence from his web app, and traced the thread step by step across those nails.

Each connection is a straight line; but when hundreds of those straight lines over, they form an optical illusion that gradually turns into detailed portrait.

And after over 25 hours of continuous stringing, the final image of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala emerged purely from straight-line geometry.

Abdulmalik Ibrahim's talent in creative art came into open when he participated in the ABU research fair organised recently as part of the activities marking the institution's 45th convocation.

At the close range, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, didn't seem to appreciate the work until when the student who did it asked him to move back a bit far. And when Prof Ahmed watched the work at far, he now saw the full image of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala emerged in it.

On the motive behind the work, the maker of the work told the Vice-Chancellor that he wanted it be presented to Okonjo-Iweala as a gift in acknowledgement of her commitment to excellence, integrity, and service to humanity.

And on 30th January, 2026, the artwork was presented to Okonjo-Iweala by His Highness, Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR, the Emir of Zazzau, shortly after the pre-convocation lecture she delivered.

She received the souvenir in the presence of the Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, His Majesty, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Ugochukwu Achebe, CFR; and the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, ABU Governing Council, Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, CFR.

Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), was visibly impressed with the gift.

She said she had stopped collecting portraits of her but she accepted the string art made of her by ABU as she said it was "special and extraordinary".

On why as a computer science student making art, Abdulmalik Ibrahim said he had been drawn to art since childhood as he had always loved visual expression.

"Instead of complaining about not studying a 'creative' course, I decided to merge both worlds. During my SIWES period, I stumbled on the works of Petros Vrellis. I studied his process deeply", he said.

He said he built his own web app that generates string sequences, using open-source algorithm as a base.

Ibrahim also said the web app became the tool he used to physically create his artworks.

"For me, programming became the brush, and algorithm became the design process", he stressed.

Ibrahim further stated that he started making art from home for fun and uploaded it on social media, saying that in a short time the work began gaining traction.

For example, Ibrahim said he was recognised by King Ateke and Wizard Chan all in Port Harcourt in Rivers State because of his artworks. This is in addition to gaining recognition from Jesse Pollak, the Chief Executive Officer of Base, he also said.

Abdulmalik Ibrahim said his work equally received visibility within the Polkadot ecosystem, saying that one of his string pieces of Davido generated over one million impressions across social platforms.
