Momentum Birth Services

Momentum Birth Services I heed the call to help new moms by providing continuous non-medical labor support during birth I completed the Advanced Doula training in June 2022.

I see childbirth as a rite of passage where every woman deserves the support of another woman for companionship, to educate, empower and love her. As your Professional Birth Doula, I will be committed to helping you prepare for the birth journey, being with you continuously during your time in labour and supporting you with some aftercare in the first few weeks following the birth. From March 2020

I started some serious soul searching to decide how I would like to serve society for the remainder of my life, and I realized that I have always felt drawn to women and childbirth. I have a history of interest in the Healing Arts and studied Shiatsu Anma with a Dr. DoAnn Tsuneo Kaneko in Santa Monica, California (one of five pioneers who brought Shiatsu from Japan to the U.S.) I also studied Pregnancy massage at the Tao Healing Arts center with Ellen Heed, whose bodywork has an integrative East-meets-West approach. Following that, I moved overseas to Vietnam as a volunteer and came full circle in my own healing journey, going back to my roots and filling in the missing pieces of the puzzle and mystery of my own birth and country of origin and I was able to get some closure on my relinquishment into an adopted American family in April 1975. If you are looking for judgement-free continuous support in childbirth that will be customised according to your personal needs and style, please contact me for a free initial consultation to see if we would be a good fit. In January 2022 I took the Foundation level course at BiADoula in Amsterdam. I have also recently taken a post-partum Pregnancy massage course from BiADoula in May 2022 that focused on hormonal rebalancing techniques. I have an intermediate level of Dutch that I continuously work on improving. I hope to be invited to be a part of your transition from Maiden to Mother or to support you in growing your family.

It's official! I'm a Provisional Spinning Babies® Certified Parent Educator and I have just found my first couple to teach and she's almost 26 weeks pregnant in a Centering Pregnancy group that I co-lead at amsterMAM. I'm very excited to embark on this journey and be able to help new moms by sharing what I've learned. I am especially proud that Gail Tully, Creator of Spinning Babies® is from Minneapolis, my home town 🥰 https://www.spinningbabies.com/professionals/find-approved-trainers/gail-tully/

Happy World Doula Week! I was privleged to assist someone at their birth on 12 March after being on call for 4 weeks and 2 days. I always learn something really profound and deep about this profession as well as about myself. I want to give a shout out and a high five to all those doulas that help guide and support women through one of the most profound moments of their lives. I salute you! 🤩

Last Tuesday I was certified as a Doula by BiA Doula Amsterdam. What an amazing feeling! This journey of getting certified included doing a clinical internship, two hospital internships (one overnight and one during the day), 3 doula clients, attending a home birth, writing a book report (as well as completing several required readings), attending a childbirth education class and many reflective writing assignments. The next steps are registering my company name and joining the Dutch professional association for Doulas (NBvD). Stay tuned for the website launch 🤩

A baby crowning, a moment of truth,
A sign that the end is near, uncouth.
The culmination of months of waiting,
The beginning of the journey breathtaking.

With each contraction, the baby descends,
Closer and closer until it transcends
The barrier between the womb and the world,
And into a new reality, it's hurled.

The head emerges, a miracle to see,
A small, dark, and downy chick, carefree.
The body follows, slick with fluids and blood,
A little life, all at once, understood.

The mother groans, a primal sound,
As she pushes and strains until she's unbound.
The baby slips out, with a final heave,
Into her arms, where it can safely breathe.

And there it is, a baby crowning,
A new life, a miracle, surrounding.
A tiny being with infinite potential,
Ready to grow, to thrive, to be essential.

So let us celebrate this moment so rare,
As we witness the start of a journey, so fair.
A baby crowning, a beginning anew,
A reminder of the beauty that life can ensue.

It's World Doula week! A big shout out to Doula Marlies, who is my mentor and one of my trainers and has inspired me on this Doula trajectory in so many ways...I am absolutely from my head to my toes "YES" about where it's leading.

Doulas are trained professionals who provide continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to families before, during, and after childbirth; and research has demonstrated that support from a doula is associated with improved outcomes such as a reduced need for Cesarean birth, increased breastfeeding initiation and duration, and a reduced incidence of postpartum mood and anxiety disorders.

Since 2011, World Doula Week is celebrated annually March 22 – March 28 to encourage and empower doulas across the world to improve the physiological, social, emotional, and psychological health of birthing people, newborns, and families during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.

I've attended the last two births I needed towards my Doula certification in the space of 1 week...both were a bit early (one was 2 weeks before EDD and one was almost 4 weeks before EDD), but I'm feeling so much gratitude about it all. Now, time for catching up with the paperwork (and catching up energetically) and getting everything submitted together...we went out to dinner yesterday as a family to celebrate.

Will you be a first time Mom? Or are you perhaps looking for a different birth experience than you had previously? Are you from abroad and don’t speak Dutch? Why would you want to hire me as your Birth Doula?

My job is to do everything in my scope of practice that would ensure the birth of your baby goes as smoothly as possible so that you can look back on your child’s unique birthday as a special experience.

Will you be a first time Mom?

Collaborating with you as your doula is an investment in your pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum period for one of the most life-changing events you will ever go through. As prepared as you would like to be, would having someone who is more experienced there for you continuously, provide some peace of mind for you? I would be fully there for you and your possible partner; as involved or uninvolved as I was called on to be, and this we would decide together in consultation.

Or are you perhaps looking for a different birth experience than you had previously?

Do you want someone who has been trained about various positions and techniques in case there happens to be a stall in labor? Would it be nice to have someone who has been broadly trained in acupressure (Shiatsu) and can use counter-pressure to help ease some of your discomfort? In a short time, we build a close relationship of trust so that you can confidently and optimally prepare for the upcoming expansion of your family.

Are you from abroad and don’t speak Dutch?

I’ve been trained in how the maternity system works here in the Netherlands. This training covered from what a normal delivery without any outside intervention looks like, all the way to what abnormalities and variations from a natural biological process could entail. I have a B1 level of Dutch (intermediate) and I’m working hard towards a B2 certification next year.

Why would you want to hire a Birth Doula?

For some people whose families live abroad, it’s helpful to think of having additional support for you (and your possible partner) during one of life’s most intimate moments. Comprehensive support would mean being a constant variable; an anchor for you. There’s no guarantee that you will be with the same birth provider throughout the delivery. Often times, someone’s shift ends, and you then get a different care provider(s). In addition, you may be familiar with a team of Midwives, but there’s no guarantee you will get the one you want to attend your birth, as this depends who is on call when you go into labor. If circumstances change, and you need medical intervention, you will be transferred from your 1st line midwife to a 2nd line midwife, in most cases, someone you have not been able to meet previously. Therefore, having a birth doula on your birth team can be a comforting presence. I can help provide reassurance about what is happening and relaxation through massage, breathing and various positions. I can also teach your partner simple massage techniques and other ways they can support you during the birth. You can lean on me as an extra set of hands, which allows the parent(s) to concentrate fully on the birth, knowing that someone is there with your thoughts and wishes in mind. Your questions are an invitation and I offer judgement free support to help try to create the right atmosphere, refer you to expertise if needed, and to better cope with the change in sensations as your labor progresses. I also have knowledge and support for the other various forms of pain relief and can help prompt you to seek further clarification on the advantages and disadvantages for you and your baby. I have home birth and hospital birth experience, medicated and non-medicated and we can discuss your preferences for the first hours after birth and in what ways you would like to stimulate a good bonding.

Basic Doula – Birth Coach Trajectory:

Initial meeting (interview) where you decide if you would like to hire me (free of charge)
First pre-natal appointment (clarify wishes about the delivery/postpartum period)
Second pre-natal appointment (also at the midwife practice, if desired) – discuss Birth Plan
Third pre-natal appointment (optional) – go over various positions and massage techniques
37-42 weeks on-call 24/7
Continuous support during labor and childbirth (staying 1-3 hours afterwards, or until no longer needed)
Postpartum visit (within one week after the birth)
Closing post-partum visit around 5-6 weeks postpartum, including postpartum foot massage to promote hormonal rebalancing

Curious if my services or payment plan fit within your budget? Please contact me for a free 30-45 minute introduction/consultation

I did my first hospital internship at the hospital in Almere where I live last night. I started at 11pm and left this morning at 9:15am. I was privileged to assist a couple having their first baby. What a gift and an honor. Thank you Moa Hofer for connecting me to someone working there in the maternity ward. Without your help I don't think I could have witnessed and been a part of the miracle this morning. I also need to report this might have not been possible if I didn't already have an intermediate level of Dutch (so feeling positive about all the effort that has gone into that endeavor and I'm feeling inspired to continue learning)...this week we will have been in The Netherlands for 4 years...time flies....and I'm feeling so grateful to be on this path! 🥰
