Nowadays, I am coming across more and more people using GLP-1 medication to help with their weightloss. Lots of my own clients use it, but it should not be solely used without good nutritional advice and guidance.
If you are on it, then you need to learn new habits that will help you stay healthy and also give you the tools you need to be able to maintain your weight loss.
These can not be taken forever and should not be used as the sole answer to weight loss. Here is why:
1️⃣ You’re eating less → risk of nutrient deficiencies
GLP-1s suppress appetite.
That’s great for fat loss—but it also means that you might skip meals and you may not get enough protein, vitamins, and minerals.
Without good nutrition, you can lose muscle instead of fat and feel fatigued.
2️⃣ Protein becomes critical. Because you’re in a calorie deficit, protein preserves muscle mass and supports recovery and strength (especially if you train). It also keeps you fuller for longer
Aim to prioritise protein at every meal (even if meals are smaller).
3️⃣ Energy levels & performance. Poor nutrition on GLP-1s can lead to low energy, dizziness, and poor gym performance
Therefore, balanced meals (protein + carbs + fats) help stabilise your blood sugar and energy levels
4️⃣ Digestive side effects. GLP-1s slow digestion, which can cause nausea, bloating, and constipation.
Nutrition helps manage this. Have smaller, balanced meals and enough fibre (but not too much too quickly)with plenty of fluids.
5️⃣ THIS IS A BIGGIE!! Long-term results vs quick weight loss. Without good nutrition, you may lose weight quickly but regain it later. Sadly, these do not teach you anything about food, and poor habits don’t change.
With good nutrition, you build sustainable habits and improve body composition (more fat loss, less muscle loss).
