Make Your Magic Happen MakeYourMagicHappen is about how to integrate yoga into your life so that you can be the best possible version of yourself. About all the miracles it can do.

You might have heard some great stories about yoga. About how people's life turned for the better when they started practising yoga. Some might be slightly exaggerated. But a lot of them might be true. To do this, the trick is to translate what you learn about yourself ON the mat into your life OFF the mat. This is exactly what MakeYourMagic does.

I used to regard this L-sit variation as something almost unreachable. But at the same time it promised something big if I'd ever reach it. But when I mastered it, there wasn't really anything. Just the knowledge that I had gained a little more control over that infamous Mula Bandha. Thus opening the door to many other postures. Everytime you (think you) fail or win, you're doing nothing else but putting a milestone on your lifes path. Other than that, it doesn't mean much. But if you understand this, then you also understand that every milestone takes you one step closer to unlimited possibilities

Thanks to I rediscovered my love for . And love grows even deeper if you share that love with others. So will be the of my class tonight. We’ll start with the one-legged pose 😁 Maybe some can do the two-legged. We’ll see. I’ll be sure not to drown them in the love because “too much love can kill you”.💖
-
One of the very important prerequisites for the two-legged Fallen Angel is the squeeze between the elbows for strength to push up and keeping the pose stable. That’s where the exercise with the blocks (picture 3) comes in handy. And I just happened to see that some of my favourite IG-yogis are throwing the challenge where todays theme is blocks. I’ll do another picture on blocks today. But one of my favourite uses of blocks is squeezing them to gain strength in shoulders, pecs, hands, and many other muscles. -
Interested in the rest of class? Then make sure to join tonight 20:15

I'm not a backbend person. I've sort of grown to love them once I do them but unless I put them on my list of "todos" I just forget about them. For myself, that's very bad because that way I fail to balance my practice which could easily lead to injuries. But for me as a teacher, it's almost unforgivable. So for my class tonight backbends are on the menu. Join me at if you're interested.

You've probably heard all these fantastic stories about people diving into Yoga and coming out completely happy... Maybe you've always thought it's a hippie conspiracy. But if you've ever wondered why this happens, then let me give you my explanation. -

We all have things in life we struggle with. Burn-out at work? All relationships crash? Constantly fealing whatever you do isn't good enough? Or whatever you do is useless? Hopping from diet to diet but never sticking to one? You promised yourself you'd study tonight but in stead you fell in sleep in front of the TV again? Whatever it is, most of us are sort of aware of it but we don't have the right tools to change ourself. -

The problem to all this lies into routines. Once a routine has set in in our behaviour it's nearly impossible to get it out again. The only way we can do it, is by introducing other routines. Starting very simple and small. Because how do you start "saying NO at work"??? You don't! You start by saying no to some things in a very small and safe environment. Like on your yoga mat. Once you've mastered your new routine there, it's much easier to use these new routines in the big world. So this time, there's a fair change it'll stick. Because it's already a routine. -

Wanna know more about all this?? This is what we'll be discussing and practising in my yoga retreat from September 8th - 10th. Check https://mindfulyogaretreats.com/product/yoga-helps-make-magic-happen/ or

They say the postures you don't like are the postures you should probably practise more. But does that also apply to teaching those postures??? Even though is one of my favourite postures to watch when done by flexible people, it's one of my least favourite to practise. In this picture I think I have a reasonable arch in my back. But as a result my leg hardly seems to come up. But when I raise that leg higher, the arch disappears - or worse, it comes just from my lower back, which is painful. I guess the combination of tight quads and unwilling spine are a bad combo in this posture. But maybe that knowledge will help me in teaching others??? We'll see if I dare teach it tonight at . Who's joining???

Yesterday we celebrated my youngest girls' fourth birthday with a big party. Typically for Amsterdam we had kids there with 6 different nationalities/backgrounds: Dutch, Moroccan, English, Spanish, Italian, and Indonesian. But the thing I loved most about this multicultural party is that my girl has no clue why it would be special to have kids with 6 different nationalities on your birthday party. To her, they're all just her friends...

A lot of yoga books, teachers and online profiles seem to say that striving for self-improvement is not "yoga". I was just looking at google impages on "yoga quotes on self improvement" and the first 100 or so say "yoga is not about self-improvement. It's about self-acceptance." The main reason I disagree about this is that in order to focus the mind, yoga postures have to be a little challenging; a little bit outside of your comfort zone. And that means you're constantly improving yourself. Of course - as I wrote before - this all starts by accepting (and I mean TRULY!! accepting) where you are now.

💪🏻

Where I think the true magic of self-acceptance and self-improvement starts is when 1) you really accept where you are now 2) you have some goal in yoga/life that you want to achieve with all your heart (let's call this passion) and 3) you remember to enjoy that you're on the path where you really want to be. And this doesn't have to be in something big. It can be in small things: learning to sing good enough for your neighbours to hear, mastering bakasana, spending less time on your phone, etc. Or, if you DO have a bigger goal in life, it can be in the smaller steps towards that bigger goal.

💪🏻

With regards to your goals in life off the mat, yoga can help you by learning how to keep mindful whatever you're doing, by finding out your stronger and weaker points, and by how to accept and work with those stronger and weaker points.

💪🏻

Wow, I'm afraid this story got a little more difficult than I intended. But I REALLY believe that yoga can help any person to make their magic happen (hence my IG-name). That's also why I'll be doing a three-day yoga retreat in October on just this subject: how can yoga help you make your magic happen. The retreat is together with Mindful Yoga Retreats. Check their page for the details

💪🏻

Another thing I'm not a typical yogi is that I usually don't mind if other people/my kids "disturb" me while doing yoga. Yoga isn't about being successful in staying focused when all conditions are ideal. It's about staying mindful and keeping your breath even when conditions aren't ideal... That's why both pictures in this post are yoga

The hardest thing about anything difficult is to make it appear easy. That requires effortlessness: the ability to do exactly as much as necessary but also as little as possible. And to do that you must completely understand and master whatever you're doing. In a yoga posture that means not only understanding the posture - it's purpose, it's energy flow, it's anatomical breakdown - but also mastering your body to use only those muscles that are necessarily and be able to relax the rest. To my humble opinion that's what Patanjali meant when he wrote "Stira Sukha Asanam" in verse II.46 (one of the very few verses in this holy yoga book that mentions doing a posture as part of yoga). He then goes on in verses II.47 and II.48 that doing this will allow you to completely turn all attention inwards, leading to freedom from all suffering. ❤️ Now, I don't know if doing a perfect will free you from all suffering, but I do know that this posture is - to me - the embodiment of : it's the perfect balance between strength/balance/long lines on the one side and flexibility/relaxing unnecessary muscles on the other side. And mastering that does require all attention to be focused inward. In the end, that focus is just a trick you can learn by practising yoga on your mat. And once you've mastered it on the mat, you can replicate it anywhere anytime you need it. ❤️ I'm teaching another class at Tula Amsterdam tonight. Maybe we'll practise . Join me if you like!
