I first met Ms Mabel Anang in 2020, when I had the privilege of treating her two autistic children in my clinic. At that time, Mabel was living in the Netherlands alone with her children, balancing full-time work while on a four-year contract abroad. Inspired by the remarkable results she saw through QST Tuina, Mabel made the courageous decision to begin studying Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Dutch Acupuncture Academy. Her goal was to bring this knowledge back to Ghana to support families with limited financial resources and few therapeutic options.
I made a promise to her that I would one day visit Ghana to provide professional training for parents and help develop QST Tuina therapists to meet these needs. We now have the profound honour of being joined by Rebecca Avern, a world-leading expert in paediatric acupuncture and Tuina therapy, to help fulfil this mission.
Stichting Qigong Therapy is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing professional training to support children with autism and sensory processing disorder. We work specifically in regions with limited resources, offering practical tools for parents and sustainable therapeutic solutions for communities that lack ongoing support.
Qigong Sensory Therapy (QST) is a structured series of Tuina manipulations taught to parents as a hands-on therapy they can use at home. This method has shown outstanding results in treating sensory processing disorders, which are often at the core of autism. QST is especially vital in regions where families are unable to access regular therapeutic support.
QST is a gentle, hands-on method used to support children with autism and sensory processing difficulties. It is rooted in the principles of Qigong and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
What it is:
A daily 20-minute massage routine using stroking, pressing, patting and rubbing techniques to calm and regulate a childโs sensory and nervous system.
Originally developed for children with autism, yet also highly beneficial for children with sensory sensitivities, sleep difficulties, emotional dysregulation, or developmental challenges.
How it works:
QST helps reduce sensory overload, improve body awareness, and calm the nervous system. Parents carry out the massage at home, while a trained practitioner teaches, supervises, and tailors the routine.
