Apple blueberry crumble

Risotto

Pumpkin soup

What is not on the pictures- vegetables and tofu in the oven, beet/feta/koriander salad, fresh made breastfeeding chai.

This was what I made today for the last day of care for a family I cared for.

8 days with their new baby,
8 days of being new parents.
This incredible and intense transition is made so much softer when we feed and nurture the family.

And simultaneously I have been caring for another sweet family who had their second child.

Each family with their own needs, their own rhythm and dynamics.

But the basic needs stay the same.

Rest, warmth, a calm environment.
Food, massage, warm hands, a listening ear. Some useful information when needed.

And a big reminder to slow down! Take baby steps.

You never regret taking it slow and being in the moment.

And for me a full on week but also a full heart 💜♥️💙

A week ago I turned 45 years old.
This birthday feels like a middle point.

It also happened in the middle of another birth wave. A week after a birth and a first week with a family. I celebrated cosily and quietly on a Friday evening with my family, sushi and chocolate cake after a full week of birth and care. The next morning I was called for the next birth. It was a marathon and rolled into the next week of care.

Tonight I am lying in a very cosy airbnb in Belgium before the second module of the voice healing training I am attending and have a moment to feel and be.

These are some thoughts that are coming up.

This is a middle point- no longer young but not yet old. I have two grandmothers one who had 90+ years of healthy life. The other at 89 years old is still enjoying her life. I called her today after a long time not speaking (she lives in Florida). She gave me a very wonderful piece of advise: ‘don’t think ahead, just live in the moment. Be grateful for what there is and enjoy the days. There will be challenges as that’s part of life but they will pass. Live each day fully.’

Her words and especially the example of how she still lives her life enjoying and savoring it gave me so much joy and inspiration!

The middle point is also the point of balance. And finding and keeping balance has been a journey. So at this point in my life I embrace the balance.

For years I have been a mother, a carer of others, a giver. I have been doing it with so much love and passion.

As I continue on this path it is time for me to honor that my needs are slowly shifting.
I long for solitude which is new to me.
I long for quiet time.
I long for singing - not new but time to give it more space in my life again.

My wish for myself is -
for more days filled with slowness, laughter and pleasure.
Time to enjoy my kids each in their own phase of life.
Time to just be together and enjoy my partner.
Time to walk with my dogs with no time frames
Drinking tea and chatting with friends.

These are some of the things that will bring me to that place of balance as I keep on my journey and mission of supporting the beginnings of life.

I share a few picture of me over the years. And I am excited to experience all the years to come. Knowing that if I’m lucky, one day I will look back and think how young and fresh I still was in 2024 🥰

Don’t ask for presents, but ask for food if people visit you after birth. Did you know that healthy and warming nutrition is one of the most important things during the postpartum period? The purpose of nutrition after birth is to give energy and feed the body so that the regeneration of the cells and healing can take place. Nutrition should not only be tasty and comforting but also re-balance the whole system, stimulate milk production, facilitate elimination and help the body in its recovery.

A mealtrain is a schedule by which your support team (family, friends, neighbors etc) can cook for you and bring you food. A mealtrain has many benefits. You’ll get healthy nutrition, but also you feel nourished and cared for by your family and friends.

Sometimes it’s hard to ask for help. Therefore in my online course Prepare your Postpartum you’ll find a template which you can use to send an email to your support team for asking about a mealtrain. As a bonus, you’ll also get an ebook about nutrition guidelines and recipes together with the online course Prepare your Postpartum. You can send the recipes to your support team for some inspiration :)

I am so excited to announce that after more than a year my new website with restyled logo is finally live!

It’s been a long slow process as my energy was often pulled in all direction. Birth, kraamzorg, mothering, life…

And the creator of the site - the very talented Guru Khalsa-Smit was patient with me through it.

The end result is thanks to my offerings and vision molded into a beautiful and balanced whole by Guru’s eye for beauty, balance and perfection. I am very grateful to her for this beautiful new site.

My wish is for this new site to be the beginning of an era of more balance and flow where I have space and time to integrate all of my passions.

Check it out www.empoweringbirth.nl

Would love to hear your feedback!

And if you need to create a logo or new site Guru Khalsa-Smit is amazing!

Once I give birth I will bounce back quickly to my pre-pregnancy state. This is a preconceived idea. Before having a baby we have a lot of preconceived ideas about what it will be like once we become parents. If there is one thing I can assure you, most of us can’t even begin to conceive what life will actually be like once the baby is born.

I always talk about life before and life after as it is one of the most life changing happenings in our life! However most of us go into this experience almost blind. Also understandable as it is almost impossible to fully prepare for it.

Having a baby is a big transformation in your life. You need time to adjust to this new life, so take your time. You don’t need to rush. You don’t need to bounce back quickly to your pregnancy state. It’s okay if you don't fit those skinny jeans already or want to go to social events. This postpartum time  is maybe only once in your life, so this is your time to be cared for and get nourished.

My contribution to your healthy start as a new parent is to offer you the online course ‘Prepare your Postpartum’ to know what to expect in this time and to support you in making your very own plan for a healthy start to your journey as a new parent.

Contact me in DM to know more or see link in Bio.

Oh and fun fact: I have a section on preconceived ideas in the program telling all about what to actually expect!

Dear mama (to be), you have created life, opened up so deeply to let life come through you and are now not only recovering but also caring full time for your new baby. It’s now your time to be cared for and get nourished, so I have 4 tips for you for a warm and well supported postpartum period.

To recover from birth and to adjust to this new life with your baby it’s so important that you get support from family and friends. So mobilizing your network is very important. I invite you to take time to think about who you have in your network to ask for support. Surround you with caring friends and family. They can help you with housekeeping, but also to ‘carry’ you if you have baby blues.

Did you know you and your baby have the same needs during postpartum? Both of you need to be nourished, cherished and getting enough rest. Both of you are very emotional during postpartum, so stay in a cocoon. Enough (warming) food is also very important (every 3 a 4 hours). Now it’s your time to be cared for, cocooned and loved.

I want to share the importance of postpartum with you. For this reason, I made the online course Prepare your postpartum. In this course you’ll get all my tips and knowledge about receiving the best care during the postpartum period.

Check the link in bio or send me a DM if you want more information.

My wish is for each and every family to have a warm, well supported start to their parenting journey. This is why I created the program Prepare your Postpartum for you.

I’m Siri, a postpartum doula and a ‘kraamverzorgster’ in the Netherlands. For the last 15 years I have been supporting families during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum. A more relaxed, warm and well supported postpartum period begins with a comprehensive understanding of what is going to happen and how to get ready for it. Therefore I created the online program Prepare your Postpartum. In this course you’ll find many tips and exercises for preparing your postpartum.

As an extra bonus, you’ll get a recipe book, a postpartum journal and free affirmations to print out. You’ll also receive support directly from me for the first 6 weeks postpartum through with a weekly ‘what to expect’ video, gentle reminders, exercises and a guided meditation!

Check the link in bio or send me a DM if you want more information.

04/10/2024

On this morning 18 years ago, I was 41weeks pregnant with my first baby. I woke up at dawn with the first signs of birth and knew that this long awaited and oh so welcome baby was on his/her way.

The day started on the toilet with the mucus plug coming loose and the first mild cramping in my womb. Full of excitement and wonder I went back to bed and got a few more hours of light sleep to save up energy. At some point in the morning I felt the need to be upright and start preparing the house for the birth. My partner woke up excited and got a wave of nesting urge. As I gently breathed through my slowly growing waves of contractions, he went about preparing the last things around the house, setting up the birthing pool etc. At some point my sister came over and made me a soup.

As the day progressed, I started to dive deeper into the waves as they grew in intensity. I needed all my energy and concentration to get through them.
As I was starting to find it challenging I called my midwife who came by end of the afternoon. She put her hands on my back and belly, reassured me and helped me breathe into the sensations. I asked her to check my progress (there was no pressure from her to do so, just my mind wanting to understand the process). When she told me I was 5 cm dilated I was very happy as I didn’t have any expectations and felt like I was well on my way towards this baby coming out.

My midwife and sister left us and I got into the warm birthing pool where for the next few hours I went into a deeper and deeper state of trance as I breathed, moaned and surfed the intense sensations coursing through my body.

I was so tired and needed some solid ground under me to support my heavy body. I felt nauseous and had to vomit. My mind informed me that this was supposed to be a good sign. In the meantime I just flowed from one wave of overwhelming intensity to the next. I felt like I was in a long dark deep tunnel. It was getting tighter and I couldn’t see the exit. I felt like I might be dying, breaking in two. But I didn’t resist it, just kept breathing , moaning, circling my hips.

See comment for the rest of the story…

Dear mama (to be),

The postpartum time can be beautiful, but maybe there are days when you feel overwhelmed and tired. Your life and body changes after birth and it can take a while to adjust to this new life. Step by step you will adjust to this new life, so take your time and believe in yourself.

Many of us carry the belief that we need to be strong at all times and need to be independent. One of the times in your life that you will need support is after the birth of a baby.

I invite you to take time to think about who you have in your network to ask for support. And consider what support you might need in your postpartum time.

If you wish to receive support with preparing for this special time I created the online program ‘Prepare you Postpartum’ to help you understand what to expect and give you a step for step guide to help you get ready for this life changing process of becoming a parent.

Send me DM or see link in Bio for more information!
