RN life abroad: work-life balance as a nurse 😌
Today, we did a road trip the whole afternoon going inland and drove back to the beach side. Def the lifestyle I love. 🫠
“For a nurse, “work-life balance” means effectively managing the demanding aspects of their job while still maintaining a healthy personal life, including time for family, friends, hobbies, and self-care, by setting boundaries, prioritizing their well-being, and creating a schedule that allows for both professional fulfillment and personal time outside of work.” - Got some help here because as nurses, we are already wired to be used to dealing with long working hours, emotionally and mentally draining situations, for some- critically ill patients, physically demanding workload, making decision during an acute situation and other ethical issues that contribute to a demanding work environment.
With this, we, nurses, really need to find our “work-life balance” to lessen stress and prevent from getting burnout.
In my own definition of “work-life balance”, when I’m on my dayoff, I prioritize self-care by getting enough sleep, reading books (not related to nursing nor anything medical), getting some sunshine, everyday calls with my parents, quality time with le hubz and travel. When I was living in Germany and the Netherlands, I realized that one of the key things that makes me happy and feel content is when it’s always sunny (I’ve always been a sun-worshipper and have to be back at it again!). So…here I am, moved again to another country- for the weather.
“Work-life balance” can be different from one to another. However, according to research and experts’ tips, working lesser than 40hrs/week, practicing stress mgt, getting support from loved ones, and choosing the right specialty that aligns your lifestyle can help one achieve a better work-life balance.
