Best run since the flu. Still easing back into it with walk-runs, but honestly they are so underrated and such a good tool for long distance trail running. Sometimes walking feels like cheating, but it's not-it's part of coming back strong. Also...was ridiculously grumpy today so naturally, rock music was required. Cue Limp Bizkit on repeat. Sometimes you just gotta let the anger out on the trail 🤟🏻🎸😂☀️

So this escalated quickly 😅 Spontaneous adventures.

Original plan: cafe, read & maybe play some Silent Hill at home (video game).

But after a busy week & dropping my youngest at school, and with the sun shining I was craving something more.

So chatgpt, I asked, hiking adventure not in Haarlem but not too far and the answer I got was "Bussumheide". Anyone heard of it? I had not, but 20mins later I was on a train there 😂

Now this was spontaneous so I left with no food, a phone whose battery dies within a few hours, needing to be back by 2pm for school pickup and jeans instead of comfy hiking clothes. But who cares about a few details when you're off somewhere new on an adventure!

And in summary, it was awesome!!!! The area was mildly hilly (for the Netherlands), beautiful (would love to come back when the heather is purple!) and it felt amazing to be somewhere actually pretty vast and with few people!! The sunshine was amazing and I Def got my vitamin C! I didn't explore half of the area and still covered 14km.

This area really is a trail runner's dream!!!

And as with all adventures there are unexpected things too:
- my phone battery being v crap and low was quite anxiety causing (need to get a new battery) and made me worry about getting trains home. It actually all worked out fine, and I have to remember people have been travelling without phones for ages - still tricky when you need to plan for school pickup, leaves little wiggle room
- I got too excited and went too far so missed the first train back, its okay there was a second back up train time - but it got quite tense when a few mins delay meant i nearly missed the connection, but i didn't and it worked out
- because I explored a bit too far & had no food and ran out of time I couldn't pick any up. I actually didn't feel that hungry which was good but a cafe at the station u was hoping to stop at heading back was shut so no food for me! Not the best planning, but again it worked out

Anyhoo, I made it back with 5min to spare before collecting my youngest! With a very full heart of adventure: somewhere new, somewhere in nature, something not v planned but learning that it often works out ❤️

Creating small mini habits and routines. Last year I discovered that motivation doesn't come first but doing comes first and motivation follows, it's a bit of a revelation.

I also discovered that doing 5mins of something is better than nothing at all, despite my brain trying to tell me that it doesn't count unless it's the full session 😂

What are your small wins and habits from the last week?

✨ 2024 was an epic year with 2 ultra-marathons, a solo adventure around mont blanc and running 1000miles/1000km over the year.

💫 2025 was a bit of a wipe out with post viral fatigue and family/life business. But during difficult times you learn a lot about yourself. And life ebbs and flows in different seasons.

🌿 So hello 2026. As a planner and lover of canva, I thought I would start with a little 2026 adventure map: with mini adventures for every week, medi adventures for each month and mega adventures: 2 currently planned: Belgium Trail Marathon and back to Chamonix Baby!!! But this year it feels like I'm really rebuilding from the foundations so I'll share as I go.

What would you love more of in 2026?

Autumn: sunbeams, little mushroom worlds & leaf confetti 🍂

Song for Autumn
BY MARY OLIVER

Don't you imagine the leaves dream now
how comfortable it will be to touch
the earth instead of the
nothingness of the air and the endless
freshets of wind? And don't you think
the trees, especially those with
mossy hollows, are beginning to look for

the birds that will come- six, a dozen-to sleep
inside their bodies? And don't you hear
the goldenrod whispering goodbye,
the everlasting being crowned with the first
tuffets of snow? The pond
stiffens and the white field over which
the fox runs so quickly brings out
its long blue shadows. The wind wags
its many tails. And in the evening
the piled firewood shifts a little,
longing to be on its way.

First run back after a small op 4 weeks ago. This year has been full of stop/start running with post-viral fatigue in the mix and today felt like another fresh beginning. It wasn't about distance or pace, just about moving again and feeling my feet on the trails.

Grateful for every step forward, however small.

An encouragement to keep taking those steps forward, even the small ones build up into bigger ones ☀️

Thought Hijacking.
I know I've made progress but I simultaneously feel uncomfortable with my progress.

I naturally compare myself to my old running self or to generic plans, like running a half marathon plan in 12 weeks. It's measurable so then "I know I've done well" and that "I'm on track".

This sense of time pressure or " I should be further along by now" is like hello perfectionism and my productivity mindset.

But I'm not behind. I'm:
✨ Building a durable baseline
✨ Listening to my body and not overdoing it
✨ Being consistent with solid fitness that doesn't unravel with life stress or fatigue

So instead maybe I should be asking myself:
✅ How many consistent weeks of running I have
had?
✅ Did I recover well after my long runs?
✅ Am I showing up with less dread and more ease in movement?

Didn't sleep much thanks to the neighbours' party 😆

So two coffees and lunch later, I still felt like skipping my workout..
.. but I knew if I didn'tmove now, l'd feel even less motivated later.

So I set the timer for 15 minutes and just did something.

Not perfect. Not pretty. But done. Sometimes that's the win: showing up even when it's hard!

Because something is always better than nothing!

I have a very tiny space to grow veggies & I love a challenge - so this is my first attempt at seeing what I can grow.

Watching the garden flourish has been such a quiet joy. There's something deeply satisfying about seeing food grow from your own hands and patience.

Every time I step outside, something new: baby beans, bright green spinach, a tomato that wasn't there yesterday. Growing veggies might be one of the best slow joys there is.
