08/05/2025

The ENEN MSc and BSc Competition, organized by the European Nuclear Education Network, supports research in nuclear science by highlighting outstanding thesis work from bachelor's and master's students. Around 20 students from each level are nominated by ENEN members or other universities, and finalists are selected based on the abstracts of their theses by the ENEN2plus Jury.

The competition is divided into themed sessions where students present their research in 10-minute talks, followed by 5 minutes of questions and discussion. A jury evaluates both the written work and the presentation, including how clearly participants answer questions. Top presenters have the chance to win ENEN awards.

To qualify for application, candidates must be BSc or MSc students enrolled at institutions that are ENEN Members or any university. They should have either defended their thesis in 2024 or early 2025, or be in the process of finalizing their thesis with a planned defence later in 2025.

For more information and registration, please check https://nuclearcompetition2025.enen.bme.hu/. Deadline for submissions is 12 May.

Applications of fusion-focused theses are welcome and strongly encouraged!

Recently, the exciting fusion project, "a-SMART-FIT," has been launched with support from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). This innovative initiative brings together industry and research to advance two cutting-edge material concepts: SMART (self-passivating tungsten-based alloys) and FIT (tungsten fibre-reinforced composites). These technologies, developed at Forschungszentrum Jülich, are now poised for production upscaling and industrialization with the aim of advancing future fusion reactors.

The project focuses on developing and qualifying plasma-facing components (PFCs) equipped with advanced cooling structures, designed for use in fusion power plants. The project is coordinated by Dr. Fritsch Group, with Zoz GmbH playing a key role. These industrial leaders are joined by two partner institutes: Fusion (IFN-1) and Materials and Processing (IMD-2) of Forschungszentrum Jülich and two of Germany's leading universities, RWTH Aachen University and Ulm University. Over the course of three years, the team will focus on developing and testing industrial-scale SMART and FIT plasma-facing components for future fusion power plants.

This collaboration marks a major milestone on the path to harnessing fusion energy for sustainable power generation.
