I provide one-on-one counselling for young people navigating mental health challenges, substance use, and life transitions across the Latrobe Valley. My approach is trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and grounded in authentic connection and practical strategies, with a strong focus on confidence-building, routines, and coping skills. I draw on evidence-based approaches including Motivational Inte

rviewing and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), tailoring each session to the unique needs and goals of my clients. My special interests include alcohol and other drugs (AOD) counselling, youth wellbeing, behaviour change, and anger management. With lived experience and formal training in counselling and AOD, I offer a calm, relatable presence to help young people feel safe, seen, and supported. I hold a Bachelor of Counselling, am fully insured for private practice, and am currently completing a Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs. I am a professional member of both VAADA (Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association) and PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia). Based in Traralgon and servicing surrounding areas. I also provide online counselling sessions Australia-wide, making my services accessible no matter where you are located. Available for private bookings, referrals, and NDIS participants (self-managed and plan-managed)..

SUBSTANCE USE: Individual V Social View 👀

People make choices.
But not on a level playing field.
Context, pressure, and access matter more than we like to admit.

Three questions that might change your relationship with alcohol ❓❓❓

1️⃣ What else can I do when I’m bored❓
2️⃣ What actually happens if I don’t suppress uncomfortable emotions❓
3️⃣ How might I connect socially without alcohol❓

You might be surprised by what you discover 🤔

How can we find reward during the process of effort?

When the process feels more rewarding, starting feels easier, pressure on outcomes reduces, and consistent action is supported. 🤔

The Cycle of Agitation – Quick Breakdown

CALM
🧠 Best stage for problem-solving, accountability and effective conversations

TRIGGER
Something sets off a stress response.

AGITATION
Irritable, restless, reactive.

ACCELARATION
Emotions rising, thinking narrows.
🧠 Trying to “fix it” here often makes things worse.

PEAK
High emotion, fight/flight.
🧠 Not likely to hear logic - Let it pass.

DE-ESCALATION
Cooling down; low energy, flat or withdrawn.
🧠 Still not the time for problem-solving.

RECOVERY
Regulation returns; clearer thinking and communication.

KEY POINT ‼️
Doing the work in Calm and Recovery -
Reflection, accountability and skill-building can reduce the intensity and frequency of this cycle over time

🧠 Thoughts → Feelings → Actions → Outcomes

Thoughts don’t create outcomes.
Our actions do.

💭 A thought is just a thought.
It doesn’t have to become a feeling.

💛 A feeling is just a feeling.
It doesn’t have to become an action.

This is where change happens:

✅ Notice the thought
Instead of reacting to it, simply observe it:
“I’m having the thought that…”

✅ Allow the feeling
Let it be there without letting it drive the steering wheel. Feelings are not instructions.

✅ Choose the action
Actions shape habits, relationships, and outcomes.
Actions should reflect our values, not our stress.

✅ Build the outcome you actually want
We can control how much power we give thoughts — and that choice shapes our outcomes.

Talking to Young People About Alcohol & Other Drugs 💭 🧠

Key points from the Alcohol & Drug Foundation (ADF):

▪️Start conversations early, keep them relaxed, and revisit them often.

▪️Be curious: Ask what your young person has seen or heard, and gently correct myths.

▪️Role-model healthy coping strategies and low-risk alcohol use.

▪️Talk about risks without fear-mongering or over-exaggerating.

▪️Equip teens with practical safety skills for parties, consent, peer pressure and emergencies.

▪️Reduce stigma: Use person-centred language so young people feel safe to open up.

▪️Seek support early if you notice changes in mood, behaviour, or school engagement.

Can we truly rely on resilience?

We’re told to bounce back, stay strong and keep going.

But constant resilience isn’t sustainable — and that’s okay.

Sometimes we don’t need to push through.

We might need to:
🕊️ Rest
🤝 Seek support
🌿 Be flexible
💛 Show self-compassion
🚪 Set boundaries
🌧️ Accept what we can’t control
🌅 Recover

Resilience has its place — but it’s best used sparingly, as a reserve for when we truly need it.

Dan O'Shea is our guest speaker on the 20th.

Dan has a long history in the Wellbeing space dating back a few years where he would run the RSL Active and Voyage Gym every Saturday morning.

Dan then started his own business working in the NDIS space.

He has now finished his counselling degree and is now a full time counselor.

Given that it is almost a new year, Dan is going to be talking about goal setting and his new business venture.

All Veterans, First Responders (and families), and support people welcome.

Last one for the year, get down, support your mates, and have a drink afterwards.
