Mozo Funkadelic Mozo Funkadelic - Vintage Drive In Disco - established 1979 Er werd simpel begonnen. Rond 1982 nam Bert afscheid en bleef Sil met de spullen op pad gaan.

Mozo Funkadelic is een drive-in disco, in 1979 opgericht door Bert van Setten uit Rhenen en Sil Castelein uit Wageningen. De disco is opgericht ter gelegenheid van een schoolreünie van de klas B3 van de Edese MTS aan de Bovenbuurtweg. Harry von Bannisseht uit Ede wierp zich op als manager en dat leverde een aantal gigs op bij de opleiding verpleging van het Wageningse Pieter Pauw-ziekenhuis. Sil bouwde de drie meter lange bar die opgevouwen tussen voorstoelen en achterbank van zijn kever paste. Op de premiere in Rhenen werd er gewoon met een combinatie van de stereo-installaties van Bert, Sil en Henk van den Engel - die een microfoon op zijn set kon aansluiten - gedraaid. Later werd het een en ander geprofessionaliseerd dankzij de inkomsten van met name de Pieter Pauw-feesten. In Doesburg werd een oude, primitieve tweedehands disco gekocht vanwege de twee onverwoestbare Dual-pickups. Van de bijbehorende discobar werden vier flightcases gebouwd; voor de Duals en voor het intussen aangeschafte Alecto-mengpaneeltje. Ook was er inmiddels een lichtshow verschenen; een soort handbediende licht-piano met ingebouwd looplicht waarvan het bedieningspaneel werd gehuisvest in de vierde, met aluminium hoeken afgewerkte flightcase. De grote maar voor discowerk niet bepaald geschikte Philips 468-00r-luidsprekerboxen waren toen al vervangen door enorme Tannoy 'Voice of the Theatre'-hoornluidsprekers. De mooie, pas aangeschafte Marantz-versterker werd door Bert meegenomen bij wijze van uitkoopsom. Rond 1985 was er een professionele, uit de Elektuur afkomstige dertigkanaals lichtcomputer en een zelfbouw versterker op basis van twee Philips eindtrappen verschenen. De gigantische Tannoys werden verkocht en ervoor in de plaats kwamen twee handzame, rode keyboardmonitors naar een ontwerp uit de Music Maker. Hiermee werd voor het eerst gedraaid op het zwembadfeest van april 1986. Eind tachtiger en begin negentiger jaren vonden er nogal wat optredens plaats bij tennisclubs Bakkershaag in Renkum en Dicke Rijst in Renswoude. De zelfbouw Philipsversterker voldeed niet zo goed en werd vervangen door een Realistic eindversterker met grafische equalizer. Ook werd het Alecto mengpaneeltje vervangen door een wat uitgebreider exemplaar. Een van de Dual pickups had de geest gegeven en werd vervangen door een Soundlab draaitafel. In die periode vonden er ook nog wel eens prive-feestjes plaats waar de klanken van Mozo Funkadelic te horen waren. We zijn inmiddels aangeland in midden negentiger jaren en met de muziek mee werd een basunit van Visaton gebouwd, aangedreven door een dikke ILP-eindtrapmodule. Deze gevouwen hoorn bleek echter te grof geschut en werd overgedaan aan Dancing & Dreams van de broertjes Van de Peppel uit Renkum. De discjockey is ondertussen wat ouder maar zo af en toe gaat het stof toch nog weer even van de oude discospullen af. Een personeelsfeestje, een reunie en een heuse vinylparty bij Bakkershaag. Naast de PC met MP3's worden de oude draaitafels met het historische vinyl in ere gehouden. In 2017 viert Mozo Funkadelic z'n 38e verjaardag. Het is wat het altijd is geweest: een leuk hobbyproject met het nadeel van het vele gesjouw om de spullen ter plekke, opgebouwd, afgebroken en weer thuisgebracht te krijgen. maar als je dan weer achter die bar staat - geweldig!

A nice song from the eighties by San Francisco-based band C**k Robin which was singers Pete Kingsberry, Anna LaCazio, drummer Lou Molino and Clive Wright on guitar. Founded in 1984, they split up in 1990 but revived the band in 2006 and still perform, in general of course with their catchy hits from the eighties such as this one.

One of those songs which make the ears point up when played on the radio: 'Tell me your plans' by the NewYork-based prepunkband The Shirts. I don't know why, guess it just has to do with a different approach to the phenomena 'popsong'. It was their only hit back then in 1978, and I remember the young singer Annie Golden with her innocent-deer eyes and her never-stopping bubblegum-chewing action between her lines. 40 years later it is still a pretty song!

Let's go back to 1975 when some Scottish blokes put the world of funk and soul upside down. Hell no, their name 'The Average White Band' was no joke, they WERE white! After 42 years it won't stop appealing our feet.
