⭐️The new Practice Lazet Journal went out today⭐️.

In this edition, I write about integration in relationship and how being with family or loved ones, especially around the Christmas holidays, can bring up mixed feelings, old patterns or moments of friction after ceremony.

It’s a theme that often comes up in my work, particularly when inner change is still fresh and finding its way into everyday life. For many, this time can feel tender, confusing and even lonely at times.

I’m also sharing a podcast episode I took part in about Ayahuasca and Plant Medicine integration, which felt fitting to revisit at this time of year, when many of us slow down a little and have space to listen.

🏮If this speaks to you and you’d like to read along, you’re very welcome to join the mailing list via the Practice Lazet website👉🏻www.practicelazet.com

Thank you for allowing me to share your story and experience working with me🙏🏻

I often forget to ask clients for a testimonial, yet their reflections hold such value.

They show you what can unfold in this work and remind me why sharing matters. So this time, I’m choosing not to stay the best kept secret😉

This reflection comes from a wise soul who’s in her thirties and it’s wonderful to see how people of all ages find their way to my practice and work: from under twenty to well over seventy.

Each in their own way an ambassador of what my psychedelic aftercare support can bring.

🎭Setting the stage🎭

Preparation is one of the most overlooked phases for those who say ‘yes’ to a psychedelic ceremony, workshop or retreat.

Many people focus on what comes after the experience, grounding insights and weaving intentions into daily life.

As a Counsellor specialised in integrating Plant Medicine experiences, I welcome that attention wholeheartedly, yet this is not the whole story.

Some years ago, at the end of the ICEERS integration training program, Marc Aixalà shared that after all his years in this field, he sensed that the way you prepare may even matter more than how you integrate afterwards.

I agree with him.

Preparing well, whether you work alone, with a therapist or in a group setting, shapes not only the ceremony itself but also how you land afterwards.

Tomorrow, I will join a three-day ceremony to support participants who will step into deep work with Ayahuasca. During a recent preparation session, a client said:

“I think I’ve entered the sacred room before the ceremony. I notice that I zoom out of conversations more often, that I question my own behaviour and that I look for deeper meanings. More than anything, I feel more emotional and drawn to step back and be with myself.”

As she spoke, I recognized the signs: She had entered the pre-ceremony phase. There is a well known saying that the ceremony begins the moment you decide to join (sometimes even months before). As my client added herself “This is when you begin to set the stage”.

Many people preparing for ceremony with Plant Medicine notice a pull to take more time for themselves, journal, draw or meditate. These impulses are invitations to slow down and tune in. I encourage clients to listen to these signals and create space for the practices that help them open up for their journey.

There is a lot of emphasis on integration and on the life that unfolds after ceremony.

Yet the preparation phase also offers a powerful 'window of opportunity': entering it consciously and with intent can deepen and enhance the quality of your experience.

In the preparation sessions I offer, we take time to slow down and explore what is present for you. This may include intuitively setting a theme or intention, sharing supportive preparation tips, learning body-focused tools to help you stay grounded during ‘peak experiences’ or simply having space to voice questions or uncertainties.

Preparing well is a way of honouring yourself, the journey ahead and the return home afterwards.

😊Time flies😊

Wow…Facebook reminded me today that it has already been one year since launching the upgraded Practice Lazet website…I still remember the process very well. In Dutch we call it a ‘berenklus’ (hard work): a labour of love that brought my work and practice to a new level.

I’ve always chosen organic growth and I’m not aiming for a huge online following. Yet in this time and age the way you show up online matters. It shapes how people find you and how they feel about you when they knock on your door.

What stays central for me is supporting the Plant Medicine communities I’ve become part of in the past decade and, of course, the clients I get to team up with: Beautiful and courageous souls from all regions of the world and different age groups (from early twenties to well over seventy). Each person arrives with their own story and their own innate wisdom.

This past year, I worked with many in psychedelic preparation and aftercare support sessions and the ‘Solid Foundation Trajectory’ (the 3-month deepening path in somatic integration I created last year) has reached its full capacity almost every cycle🙌🏼.

I also started writing the Practice Lazet Journal, a 2-weekly source of personal reflections and supportive tips for those walking ‘the path of the plants’. The latest edition went out yesterday and explores the phase after ceremony when many of us feel extra sensitive and vulnerable: without armour.

Practice Lazet collaborates with a diverse range of partners, from international therapist networks like Psychedelics Integration, Nysnö and Spinoza, to dozens ceremony communities and facilitators from different spiritual lineages and traditions. And it’s beautiful to witness how this tapestry keeps expanding.

My work life is centred around the things that bring me the most joy and fulfilment and I could not be happier with that🙏🏼.

From assisting at ceremonies to co-hosting a monthly online integration circle to new and exciting initiatives taking shape; it has been a full and meaningful year so far.

For now, I’m moving through the last week of this forty third year with lots of Axé and a thankful heart.

Axé!

♥️About integration and loved ones♥️

In my work with clients, I find that the support and understanding of loved ones play a significant role in how integration unfolds after a ceremony.

Coming home from a psychedelic experience can bring new insights, sensitivities and inspirations, but also distance and friction. Family members might feel overwhelmed, confused, or unsure how to relate to what has changed. This is natural, as transformation rarely happens at the same pace for everyone.

As I often share in my integration sessions, it is common for loved ones to struggle to understand or keep up with the changes that follow Plant Medicine work. They may not know how to relate or may simply need more time to adjust. Giving them that time and space helps ease the process for everyone. There may be moments when you feel less understood or less connected. Over time, this can shift again as a new balance takes shape.

Much of integration is about taking care of yourself, finding rest, reflection and grounding in what was opened. Yet it also includes tending to how these changes take root within your home and relationships. Those who carried on with their routines, work and responsibilities while you were away are part of the same web of life you are returning to.

Sharing your process gently and giving space for where they are can make integration into a more mutual experience. An invitation for connection, understanding and shared growth.

🩸Thicker than water🩸

As we enter the final days of October, often seen as a spiritually charged time, many traditions honour those who came before us. Across cultures, people light candles, offer food or flowers and remember their ancestors, from Samhain to Día de los Mu***os.

In the coming days, I will also hold a ritual at my home altar to honour my lineage, shown in the picture above. One of my Umbanda mentors often says, “If you don’t know where you come from, you don’t know where you’re going.”

The theme of this post is ‘Family, thicker than water’. Inspired by this time of remembrance, it reflects on how our roots and the people closest to us shape the way we integrate what ceremony brings after coming home.

Because in my work with clients, I find that the support and understanding of loved ones play a significant role in how integration unfolds after a ceremony.

🪓Chop wood, carry water💦

In my work with clients, I often see a familiar theme return after ceremony. The openness and clarity that Plant Medicine can bring are often followed by confusion or disappointment when life still feels messy or unchanged after coming home.

The period after a Plant Medicine ceremony, when life feels less effortless than hoped. I then often say, ‘Congratulations, this too is integration.'

Old patterns or routines may resurface and it’s easy to wonder, Am I doing something wrong? I would say, not at all, this too is part of the journey.

The Zen saying before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water; after enlightenment, chop wood and carry water speaks beautifully to this truth.

Working with Plant Medicine is not about escaping the human experience, but about learning to meet it with newfound awareness and care. The glimpse of 'wholeness' or 'peace' that may arise in ceremony is meant to be woven into the everyday bit by bit. Through rest, nourishment, movement and the small, steady choices that help you embody what was touched.

This might mean starting a daily meditation practice, reflecting on your ceremony through journaling, or committing to small but concrete shifts like pausing coffee, taking a non-social-media day each week and having more honest conversations with loved ones.

And when you find yourself falling back into old behavior, remember that this too is part of the journey: These moments often hold the deepest lessons and getting back on the saddle might be what empowers you to start again.

❤️‍🩹The Power of Community❤️‍🩹

Last month, Gijs and I celebrated our wedding in the Dutch Umbandaime community we’re part of. It was a day full of life, love and ‘open path’, shared with close friends.

We were invited to bring in the closing hymn and got to dance it together, as you can see in the picture.

These past years have shown me how much the power of Plant Medicine lies not only in the 'ceremony', 'journey', or 'workshop' itself, but in the community that surrounds it.

In many Indigenous traditions, this sense of togetherness is woven into daily life; a safe container where you are seen, held, and supported as you move through what has opened.

Here in the West, where individualism runs deep, many find themselves walking alone after a ceremony, carrying questions, images and feelings without a place to bring them. Yet true healing rarely happens in isolation. As the saying goes: ‘It takes a village to heal’.

A client recently shared with me how, after months of walking in circles, reaching out helped her move “from an island to a village.” What may feel vulnerable at first can become the doorway back to connection, reminding us that we don’t have to walk alone.

Again and again in my work, I witness how much it matters to give voice to what you’ve been through in the company of like-minded souls. When we allow ourselves to be seen and heard in this way, the path becomes lighter, whether you are celebrating a moment of growth or moving through a time of challenge (or both at the same time).

Perhaps you have felt this too, the way sharing your experiences with others can bring both relief and perspective. Time after time, I see how stepping into community offers support that goes beyond words, strengthening the way forward.

🌍 Roots before wings🪽

One of the questions I often get asked is why preparation matters when stepping into ceremony. Plant Medicines, like Ayahuasca or Psilocybin, can open profound states of altered awareness and take you into places you may never have encountered before. Preparation gives you a stable ground to take off from and, just as important, a safe place to land once the effects have worn off.

Last week, a client shared how she realized not fully benefiting from her first Ayahuasca ceremony because she had not taken the time to prepare. I recognise this from my own early path too. Sometimes we are simply called in and say 'yes' and there is beauty in that, but it often means that the deeper gifts of a ceremony do not fully take root.

In my Preparation support sessions, we therefore focus on building a strong foundation. This can mean setting an intention, learning practical ways to prepare and using body-focused tools that help you stay grounded during 'peak moments'. It also includes creating space for the questions or concerns that may be present, so you can step into your ceremony with trust and confidence.

Through conscious preparation, the ceremony already begins in the days and weeks before and what you plant there can keep nourishing you long after you return home.
