This is an ahuehuete — a Montezuma cypress — an ancient tree of water and time.

Likely six hundred years old, it stands with its roots directly in the stream, drinking from the moving world.

In Mesoamerican cultures, ahuehuetes were never just trees.

They were protected on purpose, at springs, near paths and beside villages.
Life gathered around them.

Ahuehuetes were seen as living connectors between the underworld, the earth, and the sky — keepers of memory, witnesses of lineage.

You can see it in the way it grows.
Roots rising to the surface.
Trunks splitting and rejoining.
Branches extending outward, drinking directly from the flowing stream, expanding in all directions at once.

Sitting beneath it is delicious, my body settles without effort.
The mind follows instantly. Just presence.
While I was meditating this morning a gorgeous hummingbird came to visit, just above my head.

This tree definitely has been here longer than stories.
And it is still doing its work.
