There is a moment in the life of a dandelion that fascinates me, the moment just before the wind takes it apart.

I recently painted a colourful dandelion sitting exactly in that moment. The seeds are still there, but ready to travel.

More than that, this painting really feels like me, the kind of artwork I want to make: full of colour, softness, and layered stories.

This piece has already found a home, but it feels like the start of something new.

Created over two painting sessions with my wonderful aunt, whose experience and guidance helped shape this piece in ways I couldn't have done alone.

I wrote a reflection about the painting, and the quiet wisdom of letting things go on Substack.

🌿 Designing my garden like a bouquet 🌿

For years, I tried to grow everything…
Even dreamed of pumpkins. But they never grew.

This year, I’m focusing on just five flowers.
Cosmos. Dahlias. Zinnias. Snapdragons. Dill.

I even made a Floral Inspiration folder (picture) to plan the shapes, colours, and textures before planting a single seed.

And I’ll be learning a lot more in my voluntary work at a cut-flower garden this season.

From scattered → intentional.
From busy → meaningful.
From more → enough.

🌸 Curious how five flowers (and hopefully some pumpkins) are teaching me focus, creativity, and a bigger picture?

Floralia Obscura

After years of not picking up my camera, I nearly let photography go. Most of my gear will still go, it belongs to a different version of me.

But today, I returned to something simpler:
A dusty DSLR, a pinhole cap, and an afternoon in the garden. No distractions. Just composition, light, and patience.

This image is the first in what I hope will become a longer exploration of beauty in stillness. It feels like the beginning of something.

A slower, softer, more intuitive way of creating. ā¤ļø

Shelley in Season — a reintroduction 🌸

This page has carried many names... each one bringing me a little closer to myself. But this one feels like home: Shelley in Season.

I’m a visual artist creating with messy hands and a full heart. In love with nature, with the seasons, with softness, and the art of slowing down.

These photo's were taken during the Summer Solstice. I hosted a Sip N Create gathering with friends, making flower wreaths, sipping drinks, and creating for the joy of it. That’s the energy I want to keep bringing here.

My art isn't always tidy or defined. I draw, print, paint, photograph, arrange, and I explore. I'm still searching for my own signature, and that's part of the beauty.

I work a wonderful but hectic job that has me travelling often. It’s easy to get pulled off balance. Art helps me come back to myself; soft, messy, playful, intuitive.

I’m not here to present a polished version of my life. I’m here to share the process. To reclaim joy. To feel more. To be in season with myself, and with nature.

If you're into slow-making, beauty, sensitivity, and creative exploration… welcome 🌿

Finished this bird of paradise drawing, and to my surprise, someone connected with it enough to give it a new home. It feels so good knowing it will be out in the world instead of tucked in my sketchbook.

These past few days, I’ve been diving deeper into different tools—pencils, aquarelle, and fineliners—just getting to know them better, letting my ideas flow naturally. It’s a wonderful reminder of how much inspiration can come from simply taking time to slow down and create.

And thank you to those who’ve been following along with my botanical journey in stories—your kind reactions and support have been encouraging and so appreciated.

I’m always open to thoughts or ideas, or the occasional request —just sharing the process as it happens.

Can’t believe I’ve already reached the last class of my botanical drawing course! Over the past few weeks we dove into aquarelle painting, working with techniques like wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, layering, glazing, lifting, and colour blending. I’m realising all over again that this is a medium that takes time and practice, but I really love it.

For my final pieces, I painted a foxglove and some autumn leaves shifting into their warm colours. It’s amazing how watercolour lets you blend and layer so naturally, it really captures the softness of nature.

I’ll continue this course in September, but over the summer I’ll be practising what I’ve learned and spending time developing my own flow with all these techniques. Already looking forward to what’s next!

Experimenting with fineliner in my botanical drawing course! šŸ–Šļø

As with any new medium, we first tested different techniques in small blocks on our paper, getting a feel for how each fineliner reacts on lightly grained paper.

Unlike pencil, shading with fineliner relies on different nib sizes and hatching techniques to create depth and texture. I played with cross-hatching, stippling, and parallel lines to bring out contrast and form. This more graphic style was completely new to me, but I really enjoyed the challenge! I never expected this technique to be so inspiring!

Each practice session teaches me not just about drawing, but also about the impact of different materials, how the right tools can completely change the experience.

Even with years of on-and-off creative exploration in various visual arts, this class is a reminder that there’s always room to grow. Looking forward to this week’s focus on aquarelle painting. I am familiar with aquarelle, but I’m curious to see what new things I’ll discover this week!

Life has its phases, and so does creativity. After a season of rest, I am stepping back into my art with a fresh perspective. There’s so much to share with you all.

I am focussing on growth and connection, both in my art and my community. I have recently started a botanical drawing course and it’s been such a refreshing experience! Every leaf, petal, and stem is a new opportunity to explore nature in a new way. I can’t wait to share more of my progress with you!

Alongside that, I have launched The Creative Nest, a community where we come together to create, share, and inspire each other. Our monthly (hybrid) SipNCreate gatherings have been amazing, and I am so excited for what’s to come.

With gardening season approaching, there’s a whole new chapter ahead to bring nature and creativity together. I am feeling so inspired by the changing season and everything that’s blossoming in my life.

Oh and there is something else in the works that is slowly coming together....

What creative season are you in? Let me know in the comments! šŸ’¬šŸ‘‡

Here's a special piece I created from seashells collected on the coast of Scotland. Shaped like a protea flower, these cleaned and sanded shells are arranged on a bamboo stem. This artwork is a gift for a dear friend, inspired by her love for protea flowers, which have been a significant inspiration for her this year. The shells were picked during a visit to our mutual friend in Scotland, making it a reminder of us both. 🌸🐚✨
