REMARKABLE: Blue light can make people think less negatively about themselves. This recently (July 2025) published study examined how light falling on our eyes (light with a lot of blue versus light with little blue) influences how we think about ourselves. Thirty-five people participated in this study (22 women and 13 men, average age 20). They were given two tasks, once under bluish light and once under low-blue light. The order of the light was alternated. During the task, participants were shown positive words (such as "good") and negative words (such as "terrible"). They had to say whether these words described themselves.

The results showed that people under blue-rich light more often rejected negative words as describing themselves. A more in-depth analysis showed that this also happened faster and more easily under blue light. In short: blue light can make people think less negatively about themselves.

Two years ago we had the most successful and best project in our history. It involved guiding the England Women’s National Football Team a.k.a. the Lionesses, on their way to the World Cup in Australia/New Zealand. With 10 hours of jet lag it was a real challenge, which is why the team, led by top coach Sarina Wiegman, opted for chrono coaching, which included the use of , chrono-dietary training and sleep instruction. Today is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

The solstice—whether summer or winter—marks a turning point in Earth’s relationship with the sun, and it can significantly influence human health and performance. These seasonal transitions bring changes in daylight, temperature, and biological rhythms, all of which can affect physical and mental well-being.

In the summer solstice, longer daylight hours boost exposure to natural sunlight, increasing vitamin D production. This can enhance mood, strengthen bones, and support immune function. The extended light also encourages more outdoor activity, promoting physical fitness, better sleep quality, and mental clarity. However, the heat and overexertion can lead to dehydration and fatigue, making hydration, rest, and sun protection critical.

During the winter solstice, the shorter days and reduced sunlight can lead to lower energy levels, disrupted circadian rhythms, and in some individuals, seasonal affective disorder (SAD). It’s a time when sleep patterns, hormone levels, and motivation may be affected. In het aprilnummer van het Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Leefstijlgeneeskunde staat een uitgebreid artikel over de behandeling van slaapproblemen bij ADHD. Maar liefst 80% van de mensen met ADHD slapen slecht en vaak komt dat omdat hun biologische klok is ontregeld. Daardoor hebben ze moeite om ’s avonds in slaap te vallen en worden ze ’s ochtends ook moeilijk wakker. Dit verlate slaapritme verergert ADHD-symptomen zoals concentratieproblemen en stemmingswisselingen.
 
Volgens prof. dr. Sandra Kooij is chronotherapie, ook wel chrono coaching genoemd, de aangewezen behandeling om de verlate slaapfase te vervroegen. Naast de juiste dosis melatonine kan 30 minuten blauw licht in de ochtend helpen bij het opstaan en ervoor zorgen dat de ernst van ADHD afneemt.
 
Er zijn diverse lichttherapiebrillen te koop, stelt prof. dr. Sandra Kooij, maar de bril die voor behandeling van de verlate slaapfase en winterdepressie bij volwassenen met ADHD is onderzocht is de Propeaq lichtbril met blauw licht. Deze bril wordt ingezet voor jetlag, winterdepressie, slaapproblemen door een verlate slaapfase, bij slaapproblemen in de nachtdienst en door topsporters om de optimale timing van hun prestaties te organiseren in landen met andere tijdzones. Today, April 11, 2025, is World Parkinson’s Day and we ask for attention and understanding for this debilitating and slowly disabling disease. Although the course of Parkinson’s disease is often progressive, there are more and more options to strongly support the quality of life of patients and their families. For example, we know from research from 2019 that administering blue light immediately after getting up and at the beginning of the evening contributes to better sleep and mood.
