Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is essential in poultry medicine to identify the most effective antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. It helps veterinarians choose targeted therapy, reducing unnecessary or ineffective drug use. By guiding responsible antimicrobial use, AST plays a key role in preventing antimicrobial resistance and ensuring flock health, productivity, and food safety.

In poultry, the use of antibiotics during viral infections is generally inappropriate and ineffective, as antibiotics target bacteria, not viruses. Viral diseases such as Newcastle disease, avian influenza, or infectious bronchitis cannot be cured or controlled through antibiotic treatment. However, antibiotics are sometimes used in poultry flocks suffering from viral infections to prevent or control secondary bacterial infections that may arise due to weakened immunity or damaged respiratory tissues. While this supportive use can reduce mortality, excessive or improper antibiotic use contributes to antimicrobial resistance, residues in meat and eggs, and environmental contamination. Therefore, antibiotic administration in poultry should always be based on veterinary advice, proper diagnosis, and strict adherence to withdrawal periods and biosecurity measures to ensure food safety and sustainable poultry production.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing concern in veterinary medicine, as the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in livestock and poultry contribute significantly to the development of resistant pathogens. In recent years, there has been increased recognition of the need for responsible antibiotic use in veterinary practices to protect both animal and public health. A 2023 report from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) revealed that the use of antibiotics in food-producing animals in Europe declined by 23% between 2011 and 2021. However, despite this reduction, the rise in resistant bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella remains a pressing issue. In particular, the emergence of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli in farmed animals has been linked to higher risks of transmission to humans through the food chain. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the importance of a "One Health" approach, where veterinary, human, and environmental health sectors collaborate to address AMR holistically. This highlights the urgent need for improved stewardship practices and alternative treatment strategies, such as phage therapy or vaccines, to reduce dependency on antibiotics in animal health.

Eggs are a highly nutritious and affordable source of high-quality protein, essential vitamins (such as B12, D, and A), minerals (like selenium and iodine), and healthy fats. Regular egg consumption supports muscle development, brain function, and eye health due to the presence of nutrients like choline and lutein. Despite past concerns about cholesterol, recent studies have shown that moderate egg intake does not significantly impact heart disease risk for most people. As such, eggs play a vital role in a balanced diet and contribute to overall human health and wellness.

Production of Bacteria-Free Eggs in Farms:

• Maintain Cleanliness: Regular cleaning and disinfection of poultry houses, equipment, and egg collection areas.

• Proper Ventilation: Ensure good air circulation to reduce moisture and bacterial growth.

• Healthy Flock Management: Vaccinate hens and monitor for diseases to prevent infections like Salmonella.

• Prompt Egg Collection: Collect eggs frequently (at least 3–4 times a day) to reduce contamination risk.

• Use of Nest Boxes: Provide clean and well-maintained nest boxes to prevent eggs from touching f***s or litter.

• Cooling and Storage: Cool eggs to below 7°C (45°F) soon after collection to inhibit bacterial growth.

• Egg Washing and Sanitization: Wash eggs with approved sanitizers if necessary, using proper temperature and pH-controlled water.

• Biosecurity Measures: Limit farm access and require hygiene protocols for workers and visitors to prevent bacterial introduction.

UNHEALED NAVEL & YOLK SACCULITIS/OMPHALITIS

NAVEL DEVELOPMENT
- During incubation, the navel (umbilicus), yolk sac (including yolk stalk), small intestine and body wall all develop at the same time
- Day 16 to 19: The small intestine (umbilical loop) is retracted into the growing body wall forming a ring-like muscle called the Umbilicus
- Day 20: Due to the rhythmic contraction of the umbilicus muscle, the entire yolk sac is retracted into the body cavity and the navel closes
- Yolk sac is connected to the small intestine via the yolk stalk which develops into Meckel’s Diverticulum after hatching
- Meckel’s Diverticulum: an appendix in the small intestine which forms a part of Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue providing immune functions

CAUSES
# Incubation Issues
- too high temperature from day 17
- too high or too low egg weight loss
- eggs from old flocks
- incorrect egg storage conditions
- high or low humidity
# Bacterial Contamination: Poor sanitation in the incubator or contaminated eggs
# Egg Quality: Poor egg shell quality leading to contaminated eggs
# E. coli: Most common bacterial cause of Yolk Sacculitis

SYMPTOMS
- Navel may appear red, swollen, or infected with/without a scab
- Wet or sticky droppings/Pasty Vents
- Poor growth
- Higher mortality
- Yolk sac may be unabsorbed, congested, contain solidified yolk, and be a darker color

PREVENTION & TREATMENT
- Maintain proper temperature & humidity throughout the incubation period
- Hygiene: throughly clean & disinfect setters, hatchers, tray, and transfer equipments
- Egg quality: Use high quality eggs from healthy flocks & store them properly
- If unhealed/infected navel problem is seen, separate the chick & apply topical antiseptic like Iodine
- Consult a veterinarian for severe cases or persistent problems
