We just released updated guidelines regarding White Blood Cell Growth Factors. These treatments help prevent infections (febrile neutropenia) during chemotherapy.

What’s new? Doctors are encouraged to use these growth factors when the risk of certain complications is 20% or higher, or for patients who may be more vulnerable due to age or medical history.

Better guidelines mean safer, more personalized treatment plans for patients everywhere.

This news article in ASCO Daily News provides an excellent summary of what’s new and novel in the newly published ASCO guidelines on use of G-CSF in patients receiving cancer treatment.

I rarely feel proud these days. But today I’m extremely happy and proud. Let me share you a small story.

When I was a medical student in Nepal, I didn’t even know much about “evidence based medicine”.

During my oncology training, ASCO guidelines were like the Bhagwad Geeta or the Bible. I would try to remember everything that’s in the guidelines. I’d have the printed copy of those guidelines on my desk and later apps on my phone. I still do. Every oncology exam I had to take, I’d reread them again and again.

Today, that little kid from Nepal became the first author and co-chair of one of those ASCO guidelines and got them published in Journal of Clinical Oncology, one of the most prestigious oncology journals.

This is more than a dream come true. If I ever have to take an oncology exam again, I’ll be reading my own guidelines 😊
