In a heartbreaking incident reported by the Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, an approximately 12-year-old boy from Lalitpur has died from rabies, a tragedy that could have been entirely prevented with a simple vaccine. The boy, who reportedly lacked parental care due to his mother’s remarriage and his father’s busy work schedule, had sought comfort at a neighbor's house just days before his death. Despite showing clear symptoms like "photophobia" (fear of light) and agitation, the severity of his condition was not realized until it was too late. Investigations revealed that although the boy was taken to a local pharmacy after being bitten by a dog, he was only given wound care and a tetanus shot, rather than the life-saving anti-rabies vaccine (ARV).
Health experts, including the Clinical Research Unit Coordinator at Sukraraj Hospital, are using this case to highlight a dangerous gap in medical knowledge among local pharmacists and the general public. While rabies is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms appear, it is also 100% preventable if the vaccine is administered immediately after an animal bite. The medical community is now calling for mandatory rabies training for pharmacists, who are often the first point of contact for victims. This case serves as a grim reminder that even in urban centers like Kathmandu, lack of awareness and "medical myths", such as believing a tetanus shot is sufficient for a dog bite, continue to claim innocent lives.
We strongly urge everyone to seek an immediate and timely anti-rabies vaccination after any animal bite to prevent such tragedies.
