On this , I want to share my story. đŸ’ª
I first heard the name Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) , when I was just 6 years old. It is a rare neurological disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. I suddenly became paralyzed, but that time it was mild and I slowly recovered.
Years later, at the age of 16, I had a severe relapse of GBS. Everything happened very quickly. Within six hours, I lost my reflexes. My diaphragm muscles became paralyzed, so I could not breathe on my own. Within 12 hours, I was placed on a ventilator .
I spent two months on a ventilator and eight months in the hospital
There is no cure for GBS, but treatments like IVIG and plasmapheresis can help. I had to go through two rounds of IVIG. The first round did not help, but thankfully the second round made a difference. These treatments are also very expensive, which makes the journey harder for many patients.
When I started recovering, I had to learn everything again — how to breathe, walk, eat, and do simple daily activities đŸ‘£.
At the same time, I was a student. Just one week before my SEE Board Exam in 2073, I became paralyzed and had to miss that academic year. I remember lying in my ICU bed crying day and night .
But slowly, I started again. With patience and determination, I continued my studies and life
Today, I am an AI Engineer and Software Engineer.
My journey inspired me to combine technology and healthcare. That is why I founded the GBS/CIDP and NeuroAI Research Foundation Nepal to work on awareness, education, advocacy, and research for neurological disorders and explore how AI in health can create change.
My story is not just about survival.
It is about turning pain into purpose ✨.
