Thousands of people have been killed by a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal on April 25, 2015. There is a widespread devastation across Nepal. The death toll is close to 10,000. More than 600,000 homes and 8,000 schools have been destroyed by the quake. The villages - especially those closest to the epicenter have suffered the most devastation from the earthquake and subsequent landslides, occurring even now. Many villages have been totally leveled by the quake. Many villagers in the rural areas are lacking the most basic necessities, such as safe drinking water, shelter, and clothing. We at Hoosiers Helping Nepal are raising funds to support disaster relief activities by organizing events and fundraisers. Dr. Prakash Karki, from Terre Haute, IN, along with a team of health professionals, traveled to Nepal on May 6th, 2015, to help victims in the rural regions. They went to remote regions of Nepal, including Majhua and Melamchi where they provided medical care and distributed other emergency relief items to people in need. There is still much work do be done in many of the villages across the affected region. Hoosiers Helping Nepal plans to return to Nepal in November 2015, prior to the winter season, to build houses in rural areas. The team will also provide free medical clinics onsite.
