“The Magic of Cabbage Leaves” 🪄

It seemed especially fitting, following yesterday’s International Day of the Midwives, to share some mātauranga from our beautiful and knowledgeable Midwifery Lead, Dr Melissa Paekau-McBride (PhD, Midwifery)🤱🏽

As part of our upcoming kaupapa, we invite all hapū māmā and whānau to join us for:

Whakanuia | International Day of the Midwife🌸

As shared by our Hauraki PHO page, we’re kicking off our midwife spotlight with our Lead Midwifery Advisor. Mihi mai ki a Melissa Paekau-McBride (Mel), uri nō Ngāti Māhanga, Ngāti Toa me Ngāti Raukawa.

Mel consistently goes above and beyond for our whānau, with feedback that speaks to the impact she makes every day. She is a highly valued member of our team, and her care, skill, and dedication are appreciated.

Bringing 20 years of experience as a Lead Maternity Carer, Mel offers deep expertise and unwavering commitment to her mahi. Her advanced frenulectomy training, postgraduate midwifery qualifications, and mentoring of rural midwives and the MFYP programme reflect the breadth of her contribution. Most recently, she has added ultrasound training to her kete, further strengthening access to care for whānau across remote areas of Pare Hauraki and Pare Waikato.

It is a privilege to work alongside Mel and witness the care and support she provides to whānau throughout their hapūtanga journey. Nō mātou te maringanui, Mel - Thank you for the aroha you weave into your mahi.

To celebrate International Midwives Day, we did something a little different, joining a shared lunch with a small group of inspiring, up-and-coming Māori and Pacific midwives at Wintec.

Today isn’t just about recognising those already working in the field, but also about celebrating student midwives who are dedicating themselves to this meaningful career path.

To all student midwives, keep up the great mahi, your hard work and long hours of study will pay off in the end.

To midwives already in the field, your mahi never goes unnoticed. The long days, sleepless nights, and dedication it takes to bring a beautiful baby into the world is truly incredible.

It’s Perinatal Mental Health Awareness Week 💛

Pregnancy and early parenthood can be beautiful — but they can also be overwhelming, exhausting, and lonely. And that’s more common than people think.

If you’re struggling, you’re not alone. Support is out there, and it’s okay to ask for help.

Let’s check in on the parents around us this week — a message or small act of kindness can mean a lot.

To all the māmā and pāpā — you’re doing amazing mahi raising your pēpi. Never forget how incredible you are 💛
