Like our whānau at Hapai Te Hauora - Maori Public Health, we want to mihi to everyone across the motu — especially those who walk alongside whānau, answering pātai, easing worries, and helping whānau give their pēpi the best start in life.
Whether you’re sharing kōrero, providing resources, or simply holding space, your mahi is making a real difference.
To tautoko this kaupapa, here are a few simple tips - filled with aroha - to help keep our pēpi safe while they sleep:
🌙 1. Back is Best
Always place pēpi on their back to sleep — it’s the safest position every time.
🧺 2. Their Own Sleep Space
Use a firm, flat surface like a wahakura, pēpi pod, cot, or bassinet.
If you do co-sleep, make sure pēpi has their own safe moenga beside you.
❌ 3. Keep it Clear
No toys, pillows, or loose blankets in pēpi’s moenga — nothing that could block their breathing or cover their face.
🌬️ 4. Clean, Safe Air
Smoke-free spaces are a must. Good airflow and dry air (think dehumidifiers) help pēpi breathe more easily (especially for those who show signs of respiratory issues).
🧣 5. Warm — Not Hot
Dress pēpi in light layers — just one more than you're wearing is perfect.
A good night’s rest for pēpi is always a win for their village.
