It was not until the 1990s that the the US government did its first major study on the impact of trauma.

We are still operating under the paradigm that trauma is “big” events while not understanding that it isn’t the event at all. It’s how the event is processed. As much as we’d love to have a “scale” of trauma— a simple measure, it’s this belief that causes so much shame + suffering.

Trauma is not just severe neglect + abuse. At its core trauma is just a word to describe any experience where the emotional response was too “big” to process. If these events happened chronically (usually they do) we develop coping mechanisms + behaviors to survive.

As “mental illness” continues to rise, so will our awareness that maybe we aren’t mentally ill after all. Maybe we have having normal reactions to trauma.

Trauma is the experience of not been seen, heard, and authentically expressed. It’s the disconnect from self that inevitably becomes disconnect from everyone around us. We then operate in survival mode, desperately seeking the next thing to distract us from our pain.

Just as trauma creates a disconnect from our core self, it also can be the path to finding our way home. Trauma can lead us to awakening, to reclaiming ourselves, + to finding purpose.

It’s what unites us in our human experience, + can gently push us to access our healing

Emotional addiction begins when we are raised in environments that cause an activated nervous system response.

Stress, chaos, + emotional abandonment (they tend to come as a package) cause neurotransmitters to be released + create hormonal responses within the body.

The body + mind learn these emotional states.

We have something called the homeostatic impulse that keeps us thinking + repeating familiar behavior of our past. To repeat these emotional states. This makes us feel stuck. Powerless to change. All of this is a subconscious process.

The trauma of experiencing chronic levels of these emotions makes us unable to feel other emotional states. This is why we (unconsciously) seek out the stress + chaos. We can finally FEEL.

When we experience trauma there’s a dull, numb existence. Until we are in the familiar, then we become activated. We feel again. Feeling anything, even if it’s negative, is better than feeling nothing.

Seeking relationships where we can experience emotionwal abandonment becomes all we know. We learn relationships. And if we’ve learned that we won’t be seen, heard, + connected with emotionally, we will repeat this pattern. In cycles. Addicted to our past, it becomes our future.

This is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s a misunderstood addiction that requires work to release.

Until we become conscious. Until we become aware that we are not our past, our patterns, or our coping mechanisms we needed to survive.

I’ve worked with many clients stuck in this cycle. I lived this cycle for almost my entire adult life. If I felt peace, or there wasn’t some crisis in my life, I’d feel irritated. Restless. I’d pick at my partner. I’d connect with people where I could vent, complain, + re-live stress.

For months in my future self journal I’d write “I am peace.” “Peace is safe” + I practiced this emotional state over + over again. It was awkward until my mind + body adjusted.

THE MOST DANGEROUS VIRUS

Dear Spiritual Partner,

Many people are speaking now and frequently about fear – of the political situation, unstable markets and weather, and now, a virus. Concern about the virus is now surpassing the other fears that frightened parts of our personalities put on inner display daily for us, if we are willing to look at (experience) them instead of distracting ourselves with food, work, s*x, obsessions, and addictions. As we take these inner displays seriously and begin to explore them, a surprising discovery becomes observable, then noticeable, then unavoidable – the most invasive virus that we can experience today is fear. It is contagious, spreads quickly, and dangerous. It puts our ability to give the gifts that we were born to give at risk, and a life without giving them is a life of emotional pain, psychological pain, physical pain, every kind of pain.

There is no vaccine against fear, but there is a way to be healthy again if you become infected: Create authentic power. Frightened parts of your personality generate pain (you are infected when this happens) and loving parts of your personality relieve you of it when you cultivate them repeatedly (you become healthy again when this happens).

Think on this. Take precautions that you would take in any potentially dangerous circumstance, for example, handling very sharp knives in the kitchen, driving on the freeway, or trying to prove your self-worth by impressing others (pursuing external power). In the case of the virus, wash your hands often for at least twenty seconds (sing the alphabet song twice). Use your elbows or knuckles to avoid touching things with your hands, and keep your hands away from your face (viruses enter through mucus membranes including around your eyes). Bump elbows to greet one another instead of hugging. Use alcohol wipes (on the plane use them to clean arm rests, head rests, and trays).

Most important, do what is necessary to insure that you do not become infected with the truly dangerous virus of fear. If you allow it to grow in you, you will experience the very painful phenomenon of imploding under the fear of the collective. The physical virus is given to you to show you what is necessary to be physically healthy. This is symbolic, as is every experience in the Earth school. The destructive virus of fear is given to you to awaken you to what is necessary to move beyond fear permanently. This is far superior to what any vaccine can produce.

You can begin this process by enjoying yourself. That is a well-known and time-tested antidote to fear. Said another way, love is the only effective (and it is always effective) remedy to a life of fear.
