I really shouldn’t be here you know.

All probabilities point otherwise.

I’m too short, too old, too bulky, too clunky, too slow, too…

Looking back, for as long as I can remember, rowing has been a part of my life. A HUGE part, in fact. It has molded me into the person I am today – undoubtedly!

I left the sport for quite some time (20 years!!!), when I was about 17… everyone was getting taller and times were changing, I suppose I wanted to pursue other adventures… But it was always there – burning beautifully and brightly in my soul.

This sport never leaves you.

When I was about 20, I ran into an old Club coach of mine. He asked me why I didn’t continue my rowing pursuits… I listed a few of the reasons (excuses…) above.

He looked me square in the eye and told me:

“What you lack in height, you make up for in heart.
You can’t do anything about your height… but bloody hell girl, you are ALL heart!”

Simon Smith encouraged me back in 2019 and we went on to do something incredible, winning gold the Intermediate 4+ at Nationals. It was like this amazing door opened right back up again and reminded me of who I am and what I can accomplish. Fast-forward to 2024… we wanted another crack! And man, did we ever give it our best nudge! Tough competition – from all angles! The bar just keeps rising in this sport – so grateful to be a part of it.

Thank you to Hamish and the kids for supporting this dream, as well as friends and family for your encouragement! A heartfelt thank you to coach Simon Smith and the DARC club/rowers/supporters, along with Mel and my mahi mates at Uruuruwhenua Hauora who have always been there in my corner!

Team (and this is only HALF of us!)
A group of people all striving to achieve a common goal.

To Win.

What’s so wrong with Wanting to Win???
Winning is a mindset, not a result.

"Wanting to Win" says that you are willing to sacrifice your ego, your pride for a shot! It’s an opportunity to express one's highest self, to put yourself out there, fully and completely - straight into the ring not fully knowing the result.

Heck, win, lose or otherwise – Wanting to Win says:
I’m willing to put everything into this thing.
I am willing to accept that I might fall short, and that I just don’t make the cut.
I’m willing to face my limitations head on.
I'm willing to sit with that.

I would argue that simply wanting to participate is a cover.
It’s hiding in the shadows for fear of the fatal blow.
It’s staying comfortable, safe, secure, intact, in control...

Wanting to Win is truly the most vulnerable state to be in.
It says, “I may not be enough, I might fall short; but s**t, did I try!” It shows heart, determination, grit, and bravery and soul.

I know all these people want to win with me.
No one is afraid to be last – instead the only thing we fear is staying safe.

Now THAT is a recipe for magic!
Bring on the season with DARC x

Winning is always the mindset.
The outcomes will take care of themselves.

RUN THE DISHWASHER TWICE.

When I was at one of my lowest (mental) points in life, I couldn’t get out of bed some days. I had no energy or motivation and was barely getting by.

I had therapy once per week, and on this particular week I didn’t have much to ‘bring’ to the session. He asked how my week was and I really had nothing to say.

“What are you struggling with?” he asked.

I gestured around me and said “I dunno man. Life.”

Not satisfied with my answer, he said “No, what exactly are you worried about right now? What feels overwhelming? When you go home after this session, what issue will be staring at you?”

I knew the answer, but it was so ridiculous that I didn’t want to say it. I wanted to have something more substantial. Something more profound. But I didn’t. So I told him,

“Honestly? The dishes. It’s stupid, I know, but the more I look at them the more I CAN’T do them because I’ll have to scrub them before I put them in the dishwasher, because the dishwasher sucks, and I just can’t stand and scrub the dishes.”

I felt like an idiot even saying it. What kind of grown woman is undone by a stack of dishes? There are people out there with actual problems, and I’m whining to my therapist about dishes? But my therapist nodded in understanding and then said:

“RUN THE DISHWASHER TWICE.”

I began to tell him that you’re not supposed to, but he stopped me.

“Why the hell aren’t you supposed to? If you don’t want to scrub the dishes and your dishwasher sucks, run it twice. Run it three times, who cares? Rules do not exist, so stop giving yourself rules.”

It blew my mind in a way that I don’t think I can properly express.

That day, I went home and tossed my smelly dishes haphazardly into the dishwasher and ran it three times. I felt like I had conquered a dragon. The next day, I took a shower lying down. A few days later. I folded my laundry and put them wherever they fit. There were no longer arbitrary rules I had to follow, and it gave me the freedom to make accomplishments again.

Now that I’m in a healthier place, I rinse off my dishes and put them in the dishwasher properly. I shower standing up. I sort my laundry. But at a time when living was a struggle instead of a blessing, I learned an incredibly important lesson:

THERE ARE NO RULES. RUN THE DISHWASHER TWICE!
