For the bank holiday I took the three boys away for a little trip and I won’t lie there was an element of dread before we left! Leo is still feeding through the night and we would all be sharing a room- I was dreading all three waking up for each feed.

Did it all go to ‘plan’? No!
Did we all have a great time? Yes!
Did we end up sharing a bed? Yes! (Leo in crib)
Did they go straight back to routine when home yesterday? Yes!

I stuck to our routine as much as possible, wind down (shorter than usual), their own blankies and comforters/ white noise all in tow. I settled everyone in their own beds first night, however it didn’t last long and instead of letting it stress everyone out into my bed they came and we all slept well after that!

When we arrived home, back to our ‘normal’ routine and all boys into their own bed/ rooms and bang- straight back to it without any trouble.

I think the key is- do what you can to keep some of your usual routine but don’t let it dictate your trip away. You can always get back into the swing when home!

When I work with families I recommend at least two weeks at home after sleep training has finished to let their little ones adjust before taking trips away!

* 8/10 for darkness helps to keep the melatonin flowing. Black out blinds are great for stopping the sun from coming in and can also help with those early waking's/ not wanting to go to sleep on summers nights!

* A non-stimulating room, especially for toddlers and older children can help them to wind down- as who can resist a room full of fun toys over bedtime!

*By blocking out outside noises it will aid for a better night's sleep, especially traffic in the early hours. White noise is great from buffing out any distracting noises.

* Have the room temperature right, not too hot and not too cold and ensure they're dressed appropriately. Lullaby trust has some great advice on what to wear and temperature guides.

What is the funniest thing your little one has cried for?

Mine like to cry if I stop them from running across the road in front of a car, if they can't have chocolate for breakfast, if I ask them to put their shoes on the right feet and so much more!!

A few tips for sleeping well whilst travelling with little ones!

I have a blog post on my website with more information and detail. The main points are- keeping familiarity for our little ones, keeping some routine where possible but most importantly to have fun whilst being mindful of how to changes might impact them!

How do you find travelling with your smalls?

Have you ever heard ‘Never wake a sleeping baby?’

A lot of the time waking a sleeping baby isn't necessary, however there are a few occasions where it is!

* If they are sleeping too long and it will impact their next nap which in turn will impact the whole cycle.

* If it's their only nap or last nap and it will impact bedtime.

* If they are due a feed. It is important, especially with our smalls to ensure they are having regular feeds. If they end up missing feeds this can impact their weight gain or cause them to wake more in the night looking to catch up!

* To set their circadian rhythm (aka their body clock). Often when sleep training your little one we advise setting a set wake up time, so their body clocks get into a familiar rhythm. Sorry but no more 10am lie ins to compensate for our little one's late-night parties.

Have you had to wake your sleeping baby? If so what for?

Sleep breeds sleep.

This is the case for our little ones (especially those extra little ones)! By getting enough daytime sleep in it will in turn make for better nights. But why? Because when our LO’s are overtired, their body produces cortisol to keep them going, however this cortisol makes it harder for them to fall to sleep, which is why it’s important to make sure we catch them before this happens!

Of course, giving a 4-year-old a 3-hour lunch nap will not breed more sleep at night, but for those that do need sleep in the day, by giving them what they need will undoubtedly help.

So, if your one-year-old isn’t sleeping at night don’t stop their afternoon nap- it’s unlikely to mean a full night’s sleep!
