🍫 β€œWhy am I still craving snacks?!” Let’s talk about it…

Bariatric surgery is a powerful and positive milestone, but understanding the psychology of nutrition is just as important as the physical changes.

πŸ’ Emotional eating & cravings
Cravings can still happen after surgery. Food is often linked to comfort, especially during stress, anxiety, or social situations. This is completely normal and something we can work through together.

🍽️ Portion control challenges
Adjusting to smaller portions can be challenging. Old habits can creep in, but with awareness and support, new habits can be built.

🧠 The emotional connection to food
Food can sometimes be used to cope with life’s ups and downs. Recognising this is a powerful step toward building a healthier relationship with eating.

🀝 You are not alone in this. Our experienced and compassionate team is here to support you every step of the way in a warm, nonjudgmental environment.

😴 Let’s Talk About Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)

OSA is a common sleep-related breathing disorder, especially in people living with overweight or obesity.

πŸ”Ž OSA in a nutshell

It is caused by repeated blockage of the upper airway during sleep, leading to:
βœ”οΈ Low oxygen levels
βœ”οΈ Poor quality sleep
βœ”οΈ Snoring and daytime fatigue

⚠️ Why does it matter?

Untreated OSA is linked to increased risk of:
β€’ High blood pressure
β€’ Type 2 diabetes
β€’ Heart disease and stroke
β€’ Accidents due to fatigue
β€’ Increased mortality risk

πŸ“Š OSA and obesity
OSA is often underdiagnosed and is more common in people with obesity.

Research shows that up to 1 in 3 patients undergoing bariatric surgery have moderate to severe OSA.

πŸ’‘ Management options
βœ”οΈ CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy
βœ”οΈ Weight loss and lifestyle changes
βœ”οΈ Bariatric surgery, which can significantly improve OSA

In fact, around 75% of patients with moderate to severe OSA can expect meaningful improvement after bariatric surgery.

🌿 Better sleep is not just about rest; it is about protecting your long-term health.

πŸ“Œ Note: We offer surgical and medical weight loss solutions.

Passing the Baton
I am writing to let you all know I will be retiring at the end of May.

I have been very lucky to have had such a wonderful practice, patients and staff over the last 30 years in both Public and Private capacity.

However, every dog has his day and it’s time to move kennels.

My colleague Suheelan Kulasegaran will continue to look after you and I hope you will support Suheelan and the team in practice.

It’s been a privilege to look after so many patients over the years.
I would particularly like to acknowledge all the hard work Sue, my wife had put into the Practice as well.

We wish you all the best for a very happy and healthy future.

Regards
Michael and Sue

πŸ”Ž Common Myths After Bariatric Surgery

There are many misconceptions surrounding bariatric surgery. Understanding the facts can help people make informed decisions and approach their health journey with confidence and clarity.

Here are some common myths and the truth behind them:

1️⃣ Myth: It’s the easy way out
Bariatric surgery is not a shortcut. It is a powerful medical tool that supports weight loss and metabolic health. Long-term success still depends on maintaining healthy habits such as regular exercise and a balanced diet.

2️⃣ Myth: Just eat less and move more. It’s all in your head
Healthy eating and a structured exercise routine that includes both strength training and cardio are important. However, for people living with severe obesity, biology, hormones, and metabolism also play a significant role. Medical support can be an important part of achieving sustainable weight loss.

3️⃣ Myth: Most people gain the weight back
Weight loss often stabilises around 12 to 18 months after surgery. Long term studies show that many patients maintain significant weight loss when supported with healthy lifestyle habits and ongoing follow-up with their care team.

4️⃣ Myth: You cannot get pregnant after surgery
Pregnancy is possible after bariatric surgery. Most specialists recommend waiting until the weight has stabilised, typically 12 to 18 months after surgery, to support the health of both mother and baby.

5️⃣ Myth: Bariatric surgery leaves large scars and is dangerous
Modern bariatric procedures are typically performed using keyhole or robotic techniques by experienced surgeons. While all surgery carries some risk, modern surgical methods and anaesthesia have made these procedures very safe. In fact, the risk of death after bariatric surgery is lower than that of many commonly performed operations, such as gallbladder or hip surgery.

Understanding the facts helps remove stigma and empowers people to make decisions that support their health and future.

πŸ’¬ How to Say No After Bariatric Surgery

Learning to say no and setting healthy boundaries can be an important part of life after bariatric surgery. Social situations often revolve around food, and it can sometimes feel uncomfortable to decline when others are offering something.

Remember, your journey is your own. Prioritising your health and wellbeing is something to feel proud of, not apologetic about.

Having a few polite responses ready can make these moments easier and help you stay confident in your choices.

Here are some simple and respectful ways to say no:

😊 1. β€œThank you, I am full.”
A straightforward and polite response that most people understand.

🍽️ 2. β€œThank you, I have already eaten a full meal.”
This lets others know you are satisfied without needing further explanation.

⏳ 3. β€œNo thank you, I will try some later.”
A gentle way to decline without feeling pressured.

πŸ‘©β€πŸ³ 4. β€œThat’s very kind of you, but please send me the recipe.”
A positive way to show appreciation while still setting your boundary.

πŸ₯— 5. β€œNo thank you, I am trying to eat healthier.”
A simple reminder of the goals you are working towards.

Setting boundaries is not about missing out. It is about protecting your progress and supporting your long term health. With time and practice, these conversations become easier.

🍽️ Hunger After Bariatric Surgery

Many people experience a significant reduction in hunger after bariatric surgery, which is one of the reasons the procedure can be so effective. But if you do feel hungry at times, do not panic.

Understanding why hunger occurs can help you manage it effectively and protect your long term progress.

Recognising the cause of hunger is important, and this is where support from your bariatric team, including our dietitians and psychologists, can make a real difference.

Here are some common reasons hunger can occur after surgery:

πŸ₯© 1. Low protein intake
Protein helps maintain satiety and stabilise energy levels. Prioritising protein at meals is essential.

πŸ₯¦ 2. Low fibre consumption
Fibre supports fullness, gut health, and stable digestion.

πŸ’§ 3. Inadequate fluid intake
Dehydration can sometimes be mistaken for hunger. Regularly sipping fluids throughout the day is important.

πŸͺ 4. Temptations and food environment
Being surrounded by highly processed or trigger foods can increase cravings and perceived hunger.

⏰ 5. Habitual eating
Sometimes hunger is linked to routine or emotional cues rather than true physical hunger.

The key is awareness and preparation. With the right guidance, structure, and support, you can develop strategies that help you stay on track and continue progressing toward your health goals.

🌿 Quality of Life After Bariatric Surgery

An often underestimated benefit of bariatric surgery is the profound improvement in quality of life that can follow.

Bariatric surgery does more than reduce the number on the scales. It is about regaining energy, confidence, mobility, and the ability to participate in the activities you enjoy.

International studies show that many patients experience significant long-term improvements in overall mood, reductions in symptoms of depression, and meaningful improvements in obesity- related quality of life measures.

For many people, it is not just about weight loss. It is about:
βœ”οΈ Moving more freely
βœ”οΈ Sleeping better
βœ”οΈ Improving metabolic health
βœ”οΈ Feeling more positive and engaged in daily life
βœ”οΈ Rebuilding self-confidence

Long-term success is supported by commitment and teamwork. Sticking to a structured exercise routine that includes both cardiovascular and resistance training is important. Following expert dietetic guidance and maintaining regular follow-up with your surgeon, dietitian, psychologist, and bariatric nurse specialist are all key pillars of sustained success.

You are not expected to do this alone. With the right structure, education, and support, meaningful and lasting change is possible.

🍎 Food Cravings After Bariatric Surgery

Food cravings are intense urges to eat a particular food, and yes, they can still happen after metabolic and bariatric surgery.

Cravings are driven by a complex interaction between the reward and pleasure pathways in the brain. They are not simply about hunger. They are neurological, emotional, and behavioural.

If cravings are not recognised and managed, overindulging can slow progress and impact long term results. The key is awareness, preparation, and support.

Here are practical ways to reduce and manage cravings:

1️⃣ Recognise and understand cravings
Awareness is powerful. Ask yourself, am I physically hungry or emotionally triggered?

2️⃣ Meal planning is critical
β€œFailing to plan is planning to fail.” Structured meals reduce impulsive choices.

3️⃣ Stay hydrated
Dehydration can sometimes feel like hunger. Sip consistently throughout the day.

4️⃣ Plan healthy snacks
Have protein-based, nourishing options ready so you are prepared when cravings arise.

5️⃣ Create meaningful distractions
Exercise, reading, learning something new, or engaging in a hobby can help redirect focus.

6️⃣ Limit tempting environments
Reduce exposure to situations where highly processed, trigger foods are front and centre.

7️⃣ Surround yourself with supportive people
Positive encouragement makes a powerful difference.

8️⃣ Lean on your dietitian
Your dietitian is one of your greatest allies. Speak openly with our team and we will guide and support you in a friendly, warm, and non judgemental way.

Remember, experiencing cravings does not mean you have failed. With the right tools and support, you can stay on track and continue building a healthier future.

πŸƒ Laparoscopic or Robotic Sleeve Gastrectomy Made Easy

If you have been exploring surgical weight loss options, here is a simple guide to understanding sleeve gastrectomy and how it can support long-term health goals.

πŸ”Ž What is it?
A laparoscopic or robotic sleeve gastrectomy is a keyhole procedure performed by highly trained surgeons. Around 80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a long, narrow tube roughly the size of a banana.

βš™οΈ How does it work?
βœ”οΈ Restricts the amount of food you can eat by reducing stomach size
βœ”οΈ Reduces the appetite hormone Ghrelin, which is produced in the upper part of the stomach, helping you feel full for longer
βœ”οΈ Supports reduced cravings and improved portion control

βš–οΈ How much weight can you lose?
Many patients can lose up to 70% of excess body weight within 12 months. Long-term success is strongly supported by maintaining a healthy eating pattern and following a structured exercise programme.

🌍 Is it common?
Yes. Sleeve gastrectomy is currently the most commonly performed bariatric operation worldwide.

🩺 Is it safe?
Safety comes from a specialised, experienced team. A Bariatric surgeon, bariatric nurse specialist, dietitian, and psychologist all play an important role in supporting long-term success and ongoing well-being.

πŸ’¬ If this is something you would like to explore, we invite you to have a conversation with our highly trained and friendly team in a supportive, judgement-free environment.

πŸ’‰ GLP-1 Agonists Made Easy

You may have heard about GLP-1 medications, but how do they actually work, and what can you expect? Here’s a simple, supportive guide to help you understand this medical weight loss option.

✨ What do GLP-1 agonists do?
βœ”οΈ Encourage and stimulate the release of insulin
βœ”οΈ Help you feel fuller sooner, supporting portion control
βœ”οΈ Improve blood sugar regulation and assist with weight loss

🧬 How do they work?
When you eat, carbohydrates break down into simple sugars that enter your bloodstream. Your body naturally produces a hormone called GLP-1, which signals the pancreas to release insulin. This helps move glucose from the blood into your cells, an important process for managing diabetes.

GLP-1 medications mimic this natural hormone, while also:
βœ”οΈ Slowing gastric emptying
βœ”οΈ Reducing hunger signals
βœ”οΈ Supporting a more stable energy balance

βš–οΈ How much weight loss can you expect?
Results vary from person to person and depend on factors like nutrition, movement, and consistency. Many patients may see a 15-20% reduction in body weight when combined with structured lifestyle support and medical guidance.

⚠️ Things to be aware of
Some people may experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea, especially early on. Medical supervision is important, and stopping medication without a long-term plan may lead to weight regain, which is why personalised care matters.

🌿 Remember, weight management is not about quick fixes. It’s about finding the right evidence-based support that works for your body and your health goals.
