The girls and I enjoyed a bacon and egg pie for lunch today.
It feels like summer today but I'm definitely looking forward to warming winter meals!

Friday: keep learning

Being open to learning new things keeps our brains healthy and provides us with a sense of purpose.

Is there something you've always wanted to learn? What's stopping you?

I've always wanted to learn to skateboard. I've been putting it off because something always seems to get in the way, pregnancy etc. But now that I'm putting it on social media I need you guys to hold me accountable!

My goal is to start learning by December... watch this space...

Tuesday: give

You don't have to be a Mister Moneybags to be a giver!

I can almost guarantee that the kids in your life LOVE to receive presents. But some of the most valuable gifts we can give are free.
Quality time and words of kindness and encouragement are crucial tools for supporting our kids' mental health.

"I love being your mum/dad/Uncle/friend/whatever. I'm so lucky to know you."

Unprompted words of kindness foster a feeling of belonging and remind our loved ones that they're worthy of being loved.

Giving also boosts the wellbeing of the giver. Try giving words of encouragement to someone today!

Monday: take notice

Sometimes being aware of our state of mind is half the battle. When we can identify and reflect on our feelings we are then able to find ways to manage them.

How do we encourage our kids and family to take notice of how they're feeling?

One of the most powerful things adults can do is to model ideal behaviour. You might be conditioned to 'put on a brave face' but it's helpful to acknowledge when you're feeling negative emotions. You don't need to burden your kids with heavy stuff but it's okay to let them know when you're struggling. Keep things simple by naming the feeling and saying how you're going to manage it. E.g. "I notice I'm feeling frustrated. I'm going to stand outside and take some deep breaths to calm down."

Kids learn from watching how we act and they pick things up quickly! When kids see adults identifying and expressing emotions in healthy ways, they learn to do it too.

Sparklers have great resources for teachers and caregivers to do alongside kids to encourage mindfulness and self-reflection. Find them here: https://sparklers.org.nz/activities/

It's almost time to say haere rā to Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. 👋

But thankfully we don't need to say goodbye to te reo Māori! We can keep practising and using te reo every day.

What is your favourite te reo word/phrase you've learnt this year?

Hello there! I've been a bit MIA so I better reintroduce myself.

I'm Joanna, I live in Auckland and I'm passionate about promoting good health in Aotearoa.

Since I last posted here I have made a second human from scratch. I now have two daughters, Lottie (3 years) and Daisy (5 months), and my wonderful husband Caleb.

I post about a bit of everything but my passions are community development, health education, and advocacy.

Thank you for following along!
