All I want for Christmas is....

To be dry! One in three women in New Zealand, or 1.1 million people struggle with bladder incontinence to varying degrees. The pelvic floor muscles can be trained just the same as your biceps can. With strengthening, up to 85% of women with incontinence could have a reduction in their symptoms or be completely dry.

The v***a!

Did you know that v***a's come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, over the past 5 years in the UK alone labioplasty's (reducing the size of a women's l***a minora) has increased by over 200%.

So why the increase in designer vagina's?

It is thought that this is largely due to the increase in access to po*******hy. Mainstream pornographic images do not show any form of l***a minora, leading to women feeling like their bodies are not normal. Changes after birth can also make women feel self conscious and down. Please rest assured, all bodies are normal! Pelvic floor physiotherapist's see their fair share of v***a's, so if you have concerns that something might be wrong, it can pay to get checked out for peace of mind, especially if you're experiencing any pain.

Pelvic pain is a complex, multi-factorial issue. It's root cause can be traced to many different anatomical areas or conditions, and there is often nerve sensitization or other more psychological causes at play too. All in all this makes pelvic pain tricky to treat, and women need a very individualized approach.

Thankfully, our pelvic floor physio Ashley has a special interest in pelvic pain, and has been accepted into a postgraduate pain management course with the University of Otago. Well done Ashley! We can't wait for you to bring your extra skills to Oasis next year 👩‍🎓

Firstly - congratulations mama! You’ve just been through one of the toughest things known to (wo)man. It’s important to be kind to yourself, and to listen to your body. Getting back into exercise postpartum can be confronting, overwhelming, and scary. It’s important to note that everybody is different, and if you had any complications through pregnancy or birth your recovery is likely to take longer. I recommend speaking to your women’s health physiotherapist or other health professional before diving back in to exercise. It’s best to start with pelvic floor exercises, gentle targeted core work and short walks. As this becomes easier you can slowly increase both the intensity and duration of your exercise as you get back into your normal activities. It’s very important to listen to your body during this time and not overextend yourself. Book with us for tailored information for your situation :)

How cute is this wee one!

Babies come in all shapes and sizes, and over the years the weight of new born babies has been trending up. The average weight of a new born baby is 3.5kg or 7.5lb. If your baby is 4kg or 8.13lb or more, they are considered large (fetal macrosomia).

Your pelvic floor will be under more stress than normal with a large baby - so it is essential that you see a pelvic floor physio around 6 weeks post birth to check up on how everything is going. Making sure your pelvic floor is nice and strong will help to prevent against pelvic floor related issues further down the line.

Did you know that the strength of your pelvic floor at 30 weeks pregnant can predict continence issues post partum?

It is common to experience incontinence - in fact one in three women who have had a baby also have continence issues.

This stems from your pelvic floor muscles at the bottom of your core. When you're pregnant, the weight of the baby causes increasing stress on these muscles. If they're not strong enough to handle this extra pressure, you may begin to experience stress incontinence. This is where during times of high pressure (sneezing, coughing, laughing, running etc) your pelvic floor can't hold onto your bladder. This happens in varying degrees of severity, but 85% of urinary incontinence can be greatly helped by pelvic floor physiotherapy.

It's really important to strengthen your pelvic floor as soon as possible, no matter what stage you're at - the best time to start is now!

Meet our team!! Ashley works at our Rosedale clinic 🐾

I am a senior physiotherapist with a keen interest in women’s health. I specifically love empowering women to take control of their pelvic symptoms, and working with young mums. I treat all different women’s health concerns, but my particular favourites are re**us diastasis, pelvic girdle pain and stress incontinence. I enjoy making personalized rehab programmes for people that fit within their lifestyle and help them towards their specific goals.
 
 I do lots of reading, courses and webinars to keep up my learning. I studied my undergraduate degree at Otago University, and am originally from Otautahi. I have family spread across the country and enjoy the excuse of visiting them to take trips away. Outside of work I enjoy going for walks, patting dogs, doing some yoga / pilates and bingeing Netflix.

Meet our team!! Roisin works across our Pt Chev and Mt Wellington clinics 🍀

I am a fully qualified and experienced physiotherapist who is passionate about treating pregnancy related issues and women’s health. I graduated from University College Dublin, and have been working in New Zealand since 2017.I have worked in a range of different settings with a wide variety of age groups.
I have extensive training in incontinence, pelvic floor dysfunction and other complex problems arising from pregnancy, childbirth and menopause as well as other general injuries covered by ACC.
I particularly enjoy incorporating Pilates into my treatment and designing patient specific exercise programmes. My passion is to help women regain control of their bodies and get back to doing what they love, with education, caring support and an individualised exercise programme.
In my spare time I enjoy travelling as much as I can, running and some yoga and Pilates. I am also trying to get as many hikes as I can done while in New Zealand!
