Today we celebrate the International Day of Older People

A time to celebrate the value of older people and acknowledge their contributions to our communities; in the work place, as volunteers, as caregivers and as whole people, with dreams, aspirations, wisdom and experience.

International Day of the Older Persons was observed for the first time in 1991 so has been running for over 30 years. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the issues affecting older persons. It also provides an opportunity to take steps to demonstrate respect. Older people are caretakers and custodians of traditions and so much knowledge and information are held within their experiences and memory.

World Alzheimer's Month/ Day is about raising awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and the need for continued support throughout the progression of Alzheimer's and other dementias. Let's break the stigma and support those living with Alzheimer's and other Dementias.

Today is Senior Citizen’s Day, a day that recognises and appreciates senior citizens for all their accomplishments and contributions to the community we live in today. Senior citizens are valued members of society, who have plenty of kind wisdom and experience to share with the younger generation.

They are often overlooked and undermined because of their fragile state, but they have played a huge role in history, either in our communities, the workforce, or in our daily households. Senior Citizen’s Day is a great opportunity to show them love and plenty of kindness in celebrating their golden age and their presence in our lives.
