My littlest babe after watching some epic ads of women playing rugby and league and videos of the Black Ferns, decided she wanted to try rugby. 🏉 She’s no Ruby Tui (yet, at least 🤭) but I’m stoked she gave it a crack and that positive representation sparked her interest in a sport that many still think is ‘just for boys’.

It was so cool to watch whanau (family) pulling together to get the kai (food) ready for our dear Aunty’s tangi (funeral) like has happened longer than I’ve been alive. ⁣
I loved seeing the shift in generations as younger whanau stepped up, making sure that all mouths would be fed. ⁣
What was poignant though, was the noticeable gaps where Aunty’s words would have been. The extra body in the kitchen or behind the bench making sure things were running smoothly or laughs were being had. ⁣Will miss her earthly presence a lot. 💛

I deal with death all the time at work and I think I have a fairly healthy relationship with it. ⁣
However I was not expecting to be rocked like I was when I found out that I had lost an Aunty just a day within losing an Uncle.⁣
⁣
My heart breaks for my cousins who have lost a parent and for my aunties and uncles who have lost a sibling. ⁣
But on a selfish level, I’m gutted that there’s not more time, that there’ll be two less smiling faces and warm hugs at each family gathering and that the air won’t be filled with their laughter. ⁣
⁣
Losing this aunty almost feels like losing my Nan all over again. ⁣
A big part of Nan has returned to her now. I can see the beauty in that, but boy it still hurts.⁣
⁣
I know all of us still here are taking so much comfort in knowing the reunion that will be happening up there will be absolutely epic and that all of us down here will all awhi each other through this time just like our aunties and uncles have demonstrated to us throughout our lives.⁣ Cannot wait to give my cuzzies a big hug when I get there. 💛

Some more super special moments. Stoked to capture the day 🥰 Also, side note: my girls have now been to two weddings and both were so chill, heaps of stuff for kids and had kids to run amuck with. Between the two weddings, there’s been a piñata, a pool, video games, a trampoline, icy poles, lolly bags, bubbles and giant spaces for hide and seek. I’m dreading taking them to a normal wedding. 🤦🏽‍♀️😂 their wedding expectations are no longer realistic.
