In late October 2023 Waha, The Māori Creative Agency, brought together a group of Māori medical students at Pariroa Pā in Hāwera for the Hauora Melodies wānanga.

Hailing from educational institutions from across Aotearoa, the students were encouraged to share their insights and intelligence about the future of the health workforce. During the three day noho, the students had sessions with musical tutors/mentors Jordyn With A Why, Sid Diamond and Tawaroa Kawana - also known as 2024 Aotearoa Music Award winner, Tawaz.

From these hui, the musical artists gathered thoughts, ideas, aspirations, mamae and experiences on paper, and fashioned the kupu into waiata. Under the watchful eye of Hauora Melodies music director, Philip Bell (aka DJ Sir-Vere), each of the artists took these resources into the studio and fashioned three individual waiata.

Jordyn With A Why ‘Hauora Melodies’ is the lead single from this three song EP and concentrates on the hopeful journey that the students can see in their future in the health sector, and speaks of their unity and power in numbers, and also of proudly representing their whanau and iwi.
