Level 1 Japanese Study group recap-“The Crane’s Gratitude (Tsuru no Ongaeshi)” 🕊️

This week we explored a beautiful traditional story, we first listened to the story in Japanese, then reviewed it together in English to deepen understanding. We also practiced some key Japanese words from the story.

One of the highlights was sharing who we would like to do “ongaeshi” (return a kindness) for 💛 It was really special to hear everyone’s thoughtful ideas.

To finish, we played a fun guessing game! One student sat with a word card behind them, and the others gave hints without using any words only gestures and actions. Lots of laughter and creativity!

Well done everyone for your great listening and participation this week 😊

Level 2 Japanese Study group- Reading practice 📚

We practiced words that express gratitude such as “Here you are”, “Thank you”, and “You’re welcome”. With White Day coming up on March 14, it was the perfect time to read and say these phrases while imagining giving and receiving gifts 🍬

Everyone did a great job reading out loud and supporting each other. I’m really proud of how confidently the students are starting to read!

Also… I might be a little obsessed with turning my students into anime characters lately 😆 I even made a little book with them in anime style and they loved seeing themselves as characters in the story.

Level 1 Class Japanese Study group recap- White Day in Japan! 🍫🎁

White Day is a special day when people return gifts they received on Valentine’s Day. In Japan, it is common for girls to give chocolates or small gifts to boys on Valentine’s Day. Then one month later, on White Day, boys give a gift back to say thank you.

The kids were very surprised to learn about this cultural difference! 😲
They were even more surprised to hear that sometimes the return gift is expected to be about three times more special than the one they received! 🎁🎁🎁

We also practiced some polite and useful Japanese words:

どうぞ (Douzo) – “Here you go” 🤲
ありがとう (Arigatou) – “Thank you” 😊
どういたしまして (Douitashimash*te) – “You’re welcome” 🌸

To practice these phrases, we used a little story I made about our students. In the story, Student A gives a pencil to the others and says “Douzo.” ✏️
The other students reply “Arigatou!” and Student A answers “Douitashimash*te!”

It was a fun way for everyone to practice giving, receiving, and speaking politely in Japanese! 💬✨

Level 2 Japanese Study group recap-Hinamatsuri🎀🍡🎀

Yesterday in Japan it was Hinamatsuri (ひなまつり) 🌸

In our Japanese study group, we first practised writing Hiragana, focusing on neat strokes and correct order. Everyone worked very hard!

Then we learnt about the special items displayed on the Hina doll stand, such as:

おひなさま (Princess)

おだいりさま (Prince)

ぼんぼり (lanterns)

もものはな (peach blossoms)

It was wonderful to explore the meaning behind this beautiful Japanese tradition and learn new vocabulary connected to the festival.

To finish our session, we made our very first Hina dolls using origami and we made a special cat version! 🐱🎎 The dolls were so cute and full of personality.

Well done everyone for another fun and cultural Japanese lesson! 🌸

Level 1 Japanese Study group Recap-Hinamatsuri🎎🌸

This week we learned about Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day), a special Japanese cultural celebration held on March 3rd. It was a wonderful opportunity to introduce a traditional Japanese event and explore what people do and display on this day.

We learned lots of new vocabulary, including おひなさま (Ohina-sama – princess doll) and おだいりさま (Odairi-sama – prince doll), along with other words related to the celebration. The tamariki were very curious and enjoyed learning about Japanese traditions and seasonal events.

And believe it or not… it was our very first origami activity in class! ✨
We made Ohina-sama and Odairi-sama, but with a fun twist, a cat version, because everyone in our class loves cats! 🐱 It was so lovely to see their creativity and concentration.

Such a fun and cultural session!

Level 2 class Japanese Study group recap-Itadakimasu!🙏

This week in our Japanese study group, we started by practicing writing hiragana and reviewing some familiar words. Everyone is becoming more confident with their characters!

We then learned about the Japanese lunch box, おべんとう (Obentou). We talked about what kinds of food are often inside and learned special phrases we say before and after eating:

いただきます (Itadakimasu) – said before eating

ごちそうさまでした (Gochisousama desh*ta) – said after eating

To make it fun, we played a card game matching words to the different elements of an Obentou. The students did a great job remembering the vocabulary!

To finish, we made our own paper lunch boxes. (We all wished we could make them with real food!) Crafting is always a favorite, and it was lovely to see everyone’s creativity shine.

If you’d like, I can also make a slightly shorter version or one that highlights specific food words you taught 😊

Level 1 Japanese Study group Recap – Itadakimasu 🍱

In our recent class, we learned about the Japanese lunch box, Obentou!
I was surprised that some of the children already knew a few of the typical items. Japanese food is definitely popular 😊

We learned new words such as:

おにぎり (onigiri – rice ball)

たまごやき (tamago-yaki – rolled egg)

てりやきチキン (teriyaki chicken)

We played a card game using picture cards to practice these foods, and everyone did a great job remembering the vocabulary.

We also practiced two very important phrases:
「いただきます」 (before eating) and 「ごちそうさま」 (after eating). These are special everyday expressions in Japan that children use at every meal.

To finish the class, everyone made their own paper Obentou! It would be wonderful to make a real Obentou together one day.

Level 2 Japanese Study group recap-All Aboard🌸🚃

This week we explored train-related vocabulary such as えき (station), でんしゃ (train), and せんろ (train tracks).

We practised useful travel phrases:
🗣️ 「次は何駅ですか?」(What is the next station?)
🗣️ 「次の駅は〇〇駅です。」(The next station is ___ Station.)

Using a board game I created with real stations from Auckland, each child chose their own train and rolled a dice to move forward. Along the way, we reviewed numbers in Japanese too. It's great speaking practice while having fun!

Taking trains is a big part of daily life in Japan, so hopefully these phrases will be useful when they visit Japan in the future 🚆🇯🇵

To finish the lesson, we played a hiragana card game. I could really see their progress. They recognised the letters much better than last week! Learning through play really works. Win-win! 🎴✨

Level 1 Class Japanese Study group recap-Choo Choo Train 🚆

This week in our Japanese class, we explored train vocabulary and practised useful phrases you can use while travelling 🚆

We focused on the question:
「次は何駅ですか?」(What is the next station?)

And the answer:
「次は◯◯駅です。」(The next station is ◯◯ station.)

To make it more exciting, we turned it into a board game! We rolled a dice and travelled along real train stations here in Auckland, aiming to reach our final goal — Swanson Station.

Each student chose a toy train as their “game piece” (like their little avatar on the track!), which made it even more engaging. They were so excited to move their trains forward after each turn.

It’s amazing how powerful repetition can be. By asking and answering the same sentence pattern together throughout the class, everyone gained more confidence and fluency naturally.

Learning through play makes language stick — and this week was a great example of that ✨

❤️Level 2 Japanese Study group recap-Tell me about your "SUKI" ❤️

Valentine’s Day is coming soon 💌 and our Level 2 students have been practicing expressing what they like in Japanese!

We used the sentence:
わたしは ___ が すきです。

Students chose their favorites from:
🍱 Japanese food
🎨 Colors
🐻 Animals
🍓 Fruits

After writing their sentences, we focused on saying them out loud clearly and confidently. Each student practiced speaking in front of the class to build confidence in talking in Japanese. I was so proud of their brave voices and supportive attitude toward each other.

At the end of the class, we created love heart–shaped cards and wrote their sentences neatly inside. Some even added cute illustrations to match what they like 💕

Confidence + creativity + Japanese practice all in one lesson!

Level 1 Class Japanese Study group recap-Happy Valentine's Day💗

This week we learnt how to say “I like…” in Japanese:
わたしは ___ が すきです。

The kids chose their favorites from different categories:
🍱 Japanese food (Nihon shoku)
🎨 Colors (Iro)
🐶 Animals (Doubutsu)
🍎 Fruits (Kudamono)

Each student picked one favorite from each category and practiced both writing and saying their sentence. It was so sweet to see them sharing what they love and learning about each other in Japanese.

To finish the lesson, we made love heart–shaped cards and wrote their favorite sentence inside. Some added adorable drawings too ✏️✨
