COMMON MISTAKES TO CONSIDER WHEN TAKING A PRENATAL //
There is a fair amount of debate on whether you need to take a prenatal or not. Whilst technically, you shouldn't need to take one, (provided you follow a nutritionally complete diet), sadly, the reality is that for the vast majority of people, we're not meeting our nutrition needs. In fact, NZ research found that only 3% of pregnant women meet the nutrition targets 🤯. Secondly, some people have higher nutrient requirements and will benefit from supplementation.
That's actually quite a scary statistic. There are a number of reasons why this is, one of which is that the majority of people in first trimester experience pregnancy symptoms which can directly impact your ability to eat nutritionally dense foods. You may have heard people talk about craving bland beige carbohydrates to cope with nausea. 🥐🥯🍞🥖🥨.
Furthermore, the first 1000 days of a child's life starts PRIOR to conception so bringing focus to your food intake is beneficial to not only you but your offspring too.
Many women become deficient in important nutrients in pregnancy, for example, Iron and vitamin D. Going into a pregnancy with optimal stores of nutrients reduces your likelihood for becoming deficient during pregnancy.
Another reason I recommend women take a prenatal prior to pregnancy is that observational research suggests, that taking one may result in shorter time to conception.
However, choosing a prenatal is not easy and sadly there is no one size fits all. We tailor supplement recommendations based on individual needs but these are 5 important mistakes to avoid.
