How Herbalist's deal with Autoimmunity!

Herbal Approaches to Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune diseases are becoming increasingly common and many diseases with previously unknown etiologies are now known or thought to be autoimmune conditions. The disease process causes inflammation and progressive destruction to tissue. Women are more likely to experience autoimmune disease than men, suggesting a possible hormonal link. Genetics also play a role as the tendency for developing autoimmune disease can run in a family. Ethnicity can influence the prevalence of some autoimmune conditions. Stress, nutritional deficiencies (especially zinc, Vitamins C, D, & E, selenium, carotenoids, and other antioxidants), food allergies, environmental pollutants (mercury, hair dyes), xenoestrogens, sunlight (lupus), and viral/bacterial infections may all be triggers for autoimmune diseases.

Several theories exist as to the causes of autoimmune diseases. Chronic low-grade bacterial or viral infections and molecular mimicry – where there are close similarities between microbial proteins, as well as gluten and casein proteins, and human proteins. The immune response directed toward the foreign protein crossreacts with the similar self-antigen.

Autoimmune diseases fall into two broad and overlapping categories. In organ-specific disease, localized trauma or a lesion produced by autoantibodies or cell-mediated reactions against a specific target antigen located in a specific cell, tissue, or organ. Organ specific conditions include Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Grave’s Disease, myasthenia gravis, glomerulonephritis, primary biliary cirrhosis, type 1 diabetes, Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, vitiligo, autoimmune hepatitis, and autoimmune adrenal disease. In systemic autoimmune disease, tissue damage and inflammation occur in multiple locations in organs or tissues without relation to their antigenic similarity. Systemic autoimmune diseases include systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Sjogren’s Syndrome, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS), polyarteritis nodosa (PAN), polymyositis, and relapsing polychondritis.

In addition to patient specific protocols, treatment for autoimmune diseases should include herbs from the following categories:
• Immune amphoterics or immunomodulators (e.g. American or Asian Ginseng Root, Ashwagandha Root, Holy Basil) normalize hypo or hyper immune activity.
• Antiinflammatory agents (e.g. cinnamon bark, sarsaparilla, turmeric) stabilize mast cells, reduce histamine release, and inhibit allergic response.
• Alteratives (e.g. burdock root, calendula flowers, cleavers, dandelion root) increase elimination of metabolic wastes.
• Antibacterial agents (e.g. andrographis, garlic, myrrh) may be necessary to resolve chronic infections. )
• Much of the immune system is located in the gut lining so the health of the GI tract is vitally important. Herbs that heal the gut include aloe gel, chamomile, marshmallow root, plantain leaf, slippery elm, turmeric, and yarrow.
• Digestive/hepatic tonics (e.g. angelica root, artichoke leaf, dandelion root) promote effective digestion and liver function and can help prevent immune dysregulation.

Herbal Healing for Campylobacter and E-coli:
Both are a common source of food and water borne illness,

Keep fluids and electrolytes up - this is most important when loosing a lot of fluids and risk of dehydration is high.

A good dose of Vitamin C - Ascorbic acid powder, added to nutrient rich broth such as chicken or vegetable, at a concentration of 0.5gms per 1/2 lt has been shown to be bactericidal towards Campylobacter jejuni. This will also give you nutritious easy digestible fluid and food intake in this time of need.

Fresh rosemary tea and manuka honey for this is another excellent choice for keeping fluids up. Rosemary is antispasmodic and astringent, so a mild tea made from this herb is excellent for infant and childhood diarrhoea. The antispasmodic property relaxes painful abdominal cramping and the astringent quality helps tighten the lower intestine and solidify the stool.

50gms Fresh rosemary
1 cup water
Combine Rosemary with the water in a covered pot, bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Sweeten with manuka honey to taste.

3 Tips to ensure you get the relaxation and recuperation this festive season:

The Festive season can be a time of great fun and celebration, time spent relaxing and rejuvenating and catching up with loved ones and friends. On the other hand for many the festive season can be more stressful than joyful. Sometimes feelings of obligation, dividedness, aloneness or separation can creep into this time of joy and relaxation. These experiences often lead to increased levels of stress, depression and or anxiety that result in default copying mechanisms such as the over consumption of food, alcohol and/or drugs. Below are 3 simple techniques to help you get clarity on what’s really important for you this season. Lieke at Vitonix wishes you all the merriness, and may health and wellness follow you into the new year.

Tip 1.) Get clear on what you wish to experience this holiday. Write a list of things you would like to spend time doing this holiday that would make your heart sing
.
Examples might be:

• It might be to read those books still sitting beside your bed!
• Take an afternoon nap everyday!
• Catch up with friends you haven’t had time for!
• Spend time in nature, walking or swimming.

The ego is well trained in creating any number of justifiable distractions to keep you from valuing and meeting your own needs first, therefore by making a list and sticking it to the fridge, or somewhere you will see it often, the intension for this festive season is set.

Tip 2.) Meet your needs before your wants.

Practical examples of meeting your body’s basic needs are:

• Start the day with a breakfast that consists of all three macronutrients, Proteins, fats and Carbs to balance blood sugar levels during the day: A good example are eggs (cooked to your liking) with some sautéed mushroom and steamed vegetables.

• Drink half your body weight in water by following this formula. 0.033 x (your body weight in) kg = litres required per day

• Go for a walk or exercise during the day to support your metabolism and circulation.

• Honour yourself with some quiet time just you, you don’t have to meditate, just a walk alone in nature can quieten the monkey chatter and ground you.

• Avoid drinking on an empty stomach, Have a good breakfast, and if you find that the day has wizzed passed without lunch a mid-afternoon platter with cheese, raw nuts, fruit and vegetables are great for afternoons with loved ones. And of course, have a glass of water between each alcoholic drink, whilst waiting for the boys to fire up the BBQ

A body that is well hydrated nourished with wholesome food and given the time to rest is less likely to crave an excess of sugar, processed food, coffee and alcohol or even recreational drugs. Often your commitment and diligence to meeting your body’s basic needs is lost in the busyness of the holiday season leaving you susceptible to increased cravings. Once your basic needs are met through providing yourself with enough quality water, quality unprocessed food, enough movement, rest and quiet time then your wants and desires can be more easily managed.

Tip 3.) Value YOU time as equally as important as time spent with others.

• Over committing yourself creates stress and anxiety. Taking the time out to give back to yourself is the most effective and empowering way to provide your self with the energy to give back to others.

And remember - see your medical herbalist for expert advise on health maintenance and prevention of dis-ease

much love Lieke
