Excited to present a Havening Techniques® Experience for wellbeing, for educators, yesterday. It brings me so much joy to share this remarkable modality.

Especially when others can immediately see the benefits and applications. Happy to do a repeat session if there is interest.

LOVE this! Not just for children!

Asking a child “what made you feel proud today?” before bed every night for seven consecutive nights, triggers a series of neurological and psychological shifts that move them from seeking external validation to developing a robust internal sense of self-worth.

Reflecting on a “proud moment” triggers the hypothalamus, which regulates productivity and releases dopamine. This “feel-good” neurotransmitter creates a positive feedback loop, encouraging children to repeat the behaviors - like persistence or kindness - that led to that feeling. Shifting the focus from what YOU are proud of to what THEY are proud of teaches the brain to value effort and process over just winning or succeeding.

Asking open-ended questions about pride also forces the child to engage in metacognition (thinking about their own thinking). Training in reflection has been shown to improve executive function and create neural pathways that resemble more mature, “adult-like” brain activity. It also strengthens the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for planning, decision-making, and impulse control.

Engaging in this ritual before bed also helps the child’s nervous system relax, reducing evening anxiety. Positive encouragement and reflection have been shown to reduce cortical excitability in regions like the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, leading to better emotional stability and task persistence.

By 7 days, the child begins to develop a sense of autonomy. They stop relying solely on parent praise and start building an inner voice that notices their own value, which is a critical buffer against future self-doubt. Regular reflection also helps children identify their personal strengths and values, supporting healthy identity development and resilience.

I am excited to have presented Havening Techniques® professional development in a Kindergarten yesterday. They are keen to bring this science‑based psychosensory tool into their daily practice as they can see its value to enhance the wellbeing of children, staff, and whānau.

Havening Techniques® offer a gentle, empowering way for children to build self‑regulation and strengthen their understanding of the Zones of Regulation. In their child‑led, play‑based environment, Havening becomes another meaningful choice that supports agency, confidence, and emotional safety.

Havening provides a shared wellbeing strategy that nurtures mindfulness, kindness, and kaitiakitanga, helping care for ourselves, each other, and Papatuanuku/Earth. The resource rich indoor spaces and expansive natural outdoor environment invite exploration and challenge, with Havening offering a grounding moment whenever big feelings arise.

Strong, reciprocal relationships remain the heart of kindergarten. By weaving Havening Techniques® into routines, a deeper the sense of safety can be created. Havening becomes part of a shared language of hauora that enriches programmes and strengthens the whole learning community.

I thought I would pop on here and demonstrate the 3 areas of Havening touch.

Havening is a proven method to address emotional challenges, improve mental wellbeing, and a tool for self regulation.

Studies show that using sensory stimulation (touch) on certain areas of the body - face, arms and hands - creates low frequency brain waves called Delta waves.

Whether 1:1 with a practitioner or with a friend, colleague, or even by yourself, Havening is producing amazing results.

Happy to have a brief chat and answer any questions.

Havening can be done in person or online with the client Self Havening.

I am excited to be sharing the gift of Havening with Schools and Educators.

Based on the latest in neuroscience, Havening Techniques® is a self managing tool that can strengthen the Zones of Regulation framework already used in classrooms.

It supports students to recognise, regulate, and reset their emotions. Using gentle self-applied touch, Havening helps students shift out of Blue, Yellow and Red Zones by sending a ‘safety signal’ to the brain, - reducing stress, restoring calm, and bringing them back to the calm zone for learning. Havening touch creates Delta Waves…telling the amygdala ‘You are safe!’ Havening enhances and supports the positive states of the Green Zone too!

Case study examples demonstrate powerful practical steps to be used by teachers in the classroom.

Havening is also great for memorisation and consolidation of learning, as well as supporting a culture of wellbeing for both students and teachers.

Please be in touch with any questions. Exciting times!

Laughter happens a lot in a Havening session. It is so healing.
The body knows how to heal itself. Feeling very grateful for the privilege of being able to hold the space with love, and to facilitate the process.
