One Day Seminar: Therapy and the Unspoken
International Guest Speaker: Dr. Joyce Slochower (New York

A rare opportunity to spend a full day with Dr Slochower (in person), exploring the powerful undercurrents of what’s left unsaid in therapy.
9:00 – 9:15 am: Welcome
9:15 -10:45 am: Session one – HOLDING: ITS USE, OVERUSE AND MISUSE. The Winnicottian notion of “holding” has entered the common psychotherapy lexicon. Dr Slochower speaks to the uses, misuses, and misunderstandings of the concept.
10:45 – 11:15 am: Morning tea
11:15 – 12:45 pm: Session two – RESISTANCE: “There’s nothing wrong with what I am doing/saying. You’re resistant/defensive/impossible.” Dr Slochower takes us through the understandings of resistance from an interpersonal and an analysts lens.
12:45 am – 1:45 pm
2:00 – 3:30 pm Session three – SECRET MISDEMEANOURS: In this challenging topic, Dr Slochower will examine the dynamics underlying collisions between professional ethics and self-interest. The wondering: “What’s going on here?” will be explored through the lens of relational dynamics
3:30 – 4:00 pm: Afternoon tea
4:00 – 5:00 pm: Session four – DISCUSSION WITH DR SLOCHOWER. Chaired by Gabriela Mercado, Recent Past President APANZ
