A Māori lady came to chat with me after Sunday’s session and shared how much she loved that I weave Māori culture into the space.
I said how ironic it is — so many people travel far and wide looking for spiritual guidance, mantras, and gurus…and they are proud of that... when right here in Aotearoa, we are standing on rich spiritual ground already.
Sometimes I wonder why “mainstream spirituality” has become so commercial~ sound healing, imported cheap singing bowls, 100+ yoga teachers in a small Nelson but we dont know who are the local Tohunga ~while the wisdom of local traditions, native plants, natural sounds, and ancestral ways gets overlooked.
e,g, Karakia itself is a vibration, a way of sound healing. We open political events with karakia to honour Te Tiriti. But imagine if we brought that same depth into our healing community too.
I’ve been making these Putuputi Wish Bottles last night🌿a little gift that carries stories and messages. They are healers whispering— if we’re willing to listen. No crystals.
And a little side note on crystals…
If you love crystals, no judgment. But~
If you ever visited the villages where crystals are mined, or saw the mountains and caves damaged by extraction, it changes how you see them. Some places in my home region have been closed because of crystal lovers.
And the truth is, many “crystals” on the market aren’t even natural. They’re factory-made, dyed, chemically treated, or manufactured to meet demand.
Meanwhile, the whenua beneath our feet, the native plants around us, the wind, the birds, the rivers — these are living medicine too. Local. Ancient. Accessible.
Sometimes the deepest healing isn’t imported. It’s already here, waiting for us to reconnect.
