The breastfeeding alphabet.

The letter of the week is; S.

S is for solids or solid food.

Babies don't need solid foods before the age of 6 months.

They THRIVE on breastmilk or formula alone.

There is just absolutely no need for food, not nutritionally and not for health reasons.

Your breastmilk is all that your baby needs for the first half of their first year of life, and breastmilk will continue to be the main source of nutrition in the second half of the year.

Hold off on starting solid foods because it's better for your baby's health.

They have their ENTIRE life to eat food, waiting 6 months is absolutely nothing. They are not missing out on anything.

We always say breastfeeding increases the protection against many diseases for both mother and child.

But that's not really completely true.

Breastfeeding is what is biologically normal to humans, therefore the "benefits" of breastfeeding is actually just a normal part of a child's (and adult's) nutrition, health, growth, development and every day life.

Choosing not to breastfeed increases the risk of many diseases and even death.

Breastfeeding matters. It matters to both mother and child. Every single parent deserves the right information on infant feeding and support on whatever choice that may be.

For many people, knowing what the risks are for choosing not to breastfeed, is enough to at least consider breastfeeding.

Seek trustworthy information, seek professional support.

Skin to skin care and/or kangaroo care.

It's extremely beneficial for all babies, especially preterm babies.

It helps to awaken your babies innate reflexes which in turn helps with breastfeeding.

- It helps initiate breastfeeding

- It reduces stress in both mother and baby

- It helps to regulate your baby's temperature, and breathing

- It helps to foster bonding between baby and parent

- It enables colonisation of the baby’s skin with the mother’s friendly bacteria

- For neonatals it helps with oxygenation, improves growth and helps to reduce hospital stay.

It's beneficial for both children and parents at any age. Not just after birth or while in hospital.

Do you want an easier bedtime with your little one who seems to hate bedtime?

Try to establish a simple but consistent bedtime routine of 3-5 steps.

This can include bathtime, a massage, reading, cuddling, feeding or whatever else you want to do that is both calm and relaxing.

Following such a predictable routine gets your little one used to what comes next and can reduce bedtime anxiety, because they know what comes next.

Now don't get me wrong. There is a big difference between a consistent but flexible routine and a strict routine or schedule. We can be consistent but remember to follow our child's needs and be flexible as necessary!

I am big on following a child's lead as that makes everything more natural and easy for both mum and baby.

Something I have a strong opinion on is the whole fed is best vs breast is best argument.

I've written a whole long article on why I don't agree with either of the terms, even though they're both technically correct.

If you want to read what I think, I will post the link in the comments.

But one thing is for sure, instead of saying fed is best or breast is best we should rather educate and support!

If you're being forced to supplement with formula or to stop breastfeeding because your baby is jaundiced, then it's time to reach out to a lactation consultant (IBCLC) to work with you and your baby.

Too often are mothers unnecessarily forced to wean or to use formula instead of frequent breastfeeding or human milk. Reach out to the right person for the right support.

While there can be many factors that influence the latch and cause ni**le damage and pain, one of the most common (and easy to fix!) causes is the sudden change in positioning. You know, the little gymnastics moves they pull once they become nice and mobile!

Adjust their positioning and latch as needed. Remember, don't settle for pain, it will only cause bigger problems. 😊

Breastfeeding facts vs myth.

Don't become offended, become informed and empowered.

Knowledge is an extremely useful tool and it is readily available to all those who are open to it.

These are some of the most common myths that you will hear as a breastfeeding mother. Here's me busting just a few of those myths for you.

Yes this is normal!

If this makes you uncomfortable, you are the problem!

The natural age for weaning from the breast is on average between the ages of 2-7 years old.

Thanks Abbie Lepage for the permission to share (from way back). You are such a wonderful inspiration and advocate for the breastfeeding families everywhere!
