The school holidays are here and getting outside to enjoy the spring sunshine is top of the list of things to do, whether it is bike riding, trampolining or picnics.

It can also be a great time to visit an osteopath without having to work around term time and after school activities. We have appointments available across all of our clinics for a check up or injury rehabilitation.

Call us to book on 03 351 8262 or check out our website osteopathiccare.org to secure a time that suits.

Gardening is a great way to keep fit and active.

Gardening is also good for your mental health – you have the chance to think things over in your head without the pressure of daily life which is a relief in our busy world.

But gardening can include a lot of repetitive movement, which can put a strain on your body. So warm up and ease into your garden work gently. Be aware that bending and reaching are high-risk movements. Ask for help lifting heavy or awkward items and listen to any pain or discomfort you might be feeling.

Our osteopaths are skilled at helping gardeners fully enjoy their time outside. Call us on 03 351 8262 or book online at osteopathiccare.org

Spring is on the way!

We love supporting the Cancer Society by buying their beautiful daffodils. 1 in 3 New Zealanders will be affected by cancer in their lifetime. Visit daffodilday.org.nz to donate.

Spring is also the time when allergies can start. Osteopathy can help relieve the symptoms of hay fever and allergies.

Immune systems are very sensitive and osteopathy can help your body by treating your ribcage, diaphragm and neck to improve immune function.

Osteopathy for children is basically the same as for adults, except that gentler techniques are used.

The aims are just the same as for grown ups, i.e. improving the alignment and functioning of the body by resolving muscle spasms, easing joint restrictions and quietening irritated nerves. Various gentle osteopathic techniques may be used, which are commonly called soft tissue, fascial, functional, or cranial osteopathy.

For parents, it is often poor sleep, appetite, mood or difficult bowel function which are signs that their child may have a restriction or be out of alignment. Children may develop structural restrictions from a variety of causes including a difficult birth or in-utero position, childhood accidents and falls, infections or inflammations or genetic disorders

The calm and soothing approach of osteopathy makes it especially suitable for working with children, including newborns. Poor alignment, mobility or functioning in children can lead to a wide range of problems which may gain relief with osteopathic treatment by the gentle re-aligning of the whole body.

Workplace injuries affect everyone from manual labourers to office workers.

People who sit in front of a computer at work often complain of headaches and sore necks, while heavy lifting can leave manual workers with back injuries, muscle strains and sciatica. Osteopathy can help.

Try these tips to avoid being injured at work:

Regular breaks away from your desk will help you avoid back and neck strain, while frequent short breaks from your computer will help to protect your eyes.
Stay well nourished and hydrated throughout the day.
Use safe techniques when lifting and ask for help to shift heavy loads.
If your job involves driving for long periods of time make sure you take regular breaks to stretch and walk around.

In Aotearoa, not a single day or week is dedicated solely to women’s health.

While we have Breast Cancer Awareness Month (which also impacts men), there is no equivalent to Men’s Health Week.

Did you know that heart-attack symptoms in women — such as chest pressure, nausea, and jaw pain — differ from those in men, yet most public health messages depict men’s symptoms.

Check out womenshealthweek.nz to take a health quiz, read some interesting articles and find events near you.

We are also here for your health journey. To make an appointment, call 03 351 8262 or book online at osteopathiccare.org

World Breastfeeding Week runs from 1 - 7 August.

Breastfeeding is a natural, renewable food that is environmentally safe. Breastfeeding is produced and delivered without pollution, packaging or waste. However, breastfeeding can be challenging when parents are not fully supported.

Osteopaths can help with breastfeeding difficulties. They will look at any cranial dysfunction and restrictions that may be linked to breastfeeding issues.

Using a hands-on approach, osteopaths can help create a more comfortable environment for your child. They recommended working with your midwife and/or a lactation consultant for additional support and information.

Coming to an osteopath for the first time can be daunting and it is normal to feel apprehensive. Our team will do our best to set your mind at ease. The reception team are helpful and welcoming, and your osteopath will explain everything to you clearly.

At your first appointment, your osteopath will listen and ask questions about your problem, your health, and any other treatments you are receiving. They will answer any questions you have about your problem.

Next they will examine the health of your muscles, joints and entire body, if necessary, by using their hands.

They may ask you to do certain movements to see how your body acts. Then the fun part - treating your body using hands-on manipulation to encourage your body back to health and sometimes giving you exercises to do at home until your next session.
