Cushla Holdaway - Registered & Practising Dietitian From a young age, I have always loved being active and sporty. I ran my first half marathon by the age of 16. This is often one of the biggest barriers.

Member of Dietitians NZ If I wasn't out riding my horses I would be running around the rural roads or taking my road bike for a spin. It wasn't until my teenage years when I started to get more competitive with long-distance running, road cycling, and duathlons,

that I realised how essential good nutrition was to my performance. This being said, I have over 10 years of experience knowing what it's like to be in your shoes, from mental wellbeing right through to the physical demands of training and competing. This depth of understanding is something that cannot be taught. Of course, fitting this in around work, life, and family can sometimes seem like an impossible task, but this is where I can help. Training and nutrition are only one aspect of the puzzle, but optimising nutrition is one of the most fundamental aspects to overall health and sports performance. I am incredibly passionate about people, nutrition, food, and fitness, so continuing this with study at University was a 'no-brainer.' I ended up moving to Dunedin and studying a Bachelor of Science majoring in Human Nutrition. After completing this I decided to do a postgraduate Master of Dietetics to become a Dietitian and most recently completed the sports nutrition course with Sports Dietitians Australia to become and Accredited Sports Dietitian!

Having worked throughout the South Island in a range of hospitals and disciplines, I have been involved in many different areas of dietetics, including geriatrics, mental health, gastroenterology, general surgery, cardiovascular health, and diabetes, to name a few. However, sports nutrition alongside enhancing people’s overall health and relationship with food is an area I just can’t get enough of. I have worked with athletes from all walks of life, each with their unique goals, both big and small, ranging from local running events, to Ironman's to the iconic Coast to Coast. Something unique from my service is I am continually putting the theory into practice with my own training programme and sporting events. Sometimes nutrition strategies can sound great on paper, but in reality they are just not feasible for everyone! I put a strong focus on each individuals health and performance goals and understand there is no 'one size fits all' when it comes to nutrition. Your body is not everybody, and your other commitments among the balancing act of work and life is different from anyone else. Improving one's lifestyle, nutritional health, or athletic performance requires behavioural change and commitment. A unique aspect of the service I offer is that you will receive continued support, education, and motivation, which is the key to successful outcomes. As the expression goes, to eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art. Accredited sports dietitian (SDA)

THANK YOU all of you incredible people!!

Christmas is nearly here! Crazy huh?

I just want to acknowledge how much I appreciate each and every one of you who support me, choose to work with me, and wholeheartedly put your trust in me to help you be the best version of yourself💥

Amongst all the science, sports nutrition, food and everything in between, it is the people I get to work alongside, my inspiring clients, that actually is the best part of all. Seeing what you are capable of achieving with some expertise, guidance, and support is so rewarding. The rapport that is built over weeks, months, and years is pretty special too, and one of the reasons I love my work so much.

You’re all amazing people and I am so fortunate I get to work with you. Thank you. I am so excited for continued ventures, growth, and epic-ness in 2022.

Merry Christmas & best wishes🎄

Take a closer look 🕵️‍♀️

I often have chats with clients about commercial juices and smoothies, as the majority of people believe they are making a really healthy choice consuming them 🥤

Taking a closer look at Tank recently, I was surprised to see the sugar content of some of their smoothies. Obviously, this sugar content is mostly naturally from fruits, but often when lots of fruit is blended into a smoothie or juice it is very easy to consume a lot of this natural sugar in a few mouthfuls. Eating the same amount of fruit whole would be more challenging simply because the volume of food would be significant and much more filling.

As a side note, for this comparison I chose the largest and highest in sugar smoothie available off the Tank menu. The lowest in sugar in the largest size contained a much lower 22g of sugar - the plant-based health nutrition protein smoothie.

The point of this comparison is more often than not, you can easily make your own more nutritious smoothie that is higher in protein and lower in sugar at home compared to one purchased out. Also saves you $$$$

I also want to highlight that juices and smoothies are not made equal and can be a significant addition to your day when you think you’re making a nutritious choice. There are certainly less nutritious foods compared to juices and smoothies available - but it’s good awareness of the sugar load that SOME can come with.

When you want to enjoy a smoothie out with friends, most bigger food chains have all their nutrition info online so you can make a more informed choice if you want to ✅
