Check Your Bits..

It seems so simple and obvious! Key message is clear... check yo' self!!

We wanted it to stand out. We wanted it to be a little bit cheeky, tongue in cheek. We wanted it to make people think. We wanted it to be a conversation starter.

Talking about certain aspects of health and body parts still seems so taboo to alot of people. We want to help shift the narrative on that. We are doing younger generations a disservice by not talking about these things and normalising such conversations. It could save a life!!

When you see it, we hope it prompts you to think about your health and wellbeing and to check in.

Happy Easter!!

I hope the Easter bunnie brought you some self care goodies too.

It was the Easter long weekend of 2020 (in amongst that endless long weekend of lockdown) that I found the lump in my breast in the shower.

The quick minute of self care that changed everything!! That saved my life.

Enjoy the chocolate this weekend, and make sure to prioritize a self check too! Do it to honour yourself and all the women who aren't lucky enough to be here anymore to spend Easter with their families.

Two biggest risk factors for Breast Cancer?

Being a female and getting older.

As we age our chances of developing Breast Cancer increase. The average age of diagnosis in NZ is 58. The majority of cases, 70-75%; are in women over 50 and around 13% are women under the age of 45.

No matter what stage of life you're in, it's super important to get to know your normal and develop a consistent self checking habit.

Do you check your bits regularly??

I just LOVE hearing feedback on our sessions and what the key takeaways were. This testimonial totally filled my cup 🧡

"Check your bits- and that we did. We were lucky enough to have our culture committee approve a talk by Tamara at our most recent staff meeting.

Tam came and chatted to our workplace about the importance of daily breast checks and getting to know your normal. Our team of 17 all learnt something new with the talk covering the basic breast anatomy, Breast abnormalities, Signs and symptoms of Breast Cancer and how to perform a self-check. Tam put everyone at ease with her beautiful nature, her positive demeaner, and her straightforward answers to everyone’s questions. Nothing was off the table, and a lot of my colleagues left with answers to questions they felt too embarrassed to ask elsewhere. Knowing Tamara has already been on her own Breast Cancer journey so young and her background in Imaging really cemented the need for self-awareness around our bodies and how important this message is to convey.

Throughout the weeks we have discussed Tamara’s presentation multiple times in the workplace, and many of us have spread awareness to other women and men in our lives. The education is so important to share! I want to shout it from the rooftops!

I highly recommend that everyone listens to Tamara’s story and the importance of knowing your normal- so that way you can advocate for yourself if you need to. The Check Your Bits products were shown at the end of the presentation, and we all happily brought a bottle or two to take home. A Passion Project to be proud of! Thanks Tam!"

Want me to come along and empower your work team? Send me a DM to lock a session in before the year ends!

Story time.

Picture this. You're heavily pregnant. In the shower you stumble across a lump in your breast as you're washing.
Odd. You haven't noticed that before. But you don't actually check them regularly. I mean you have no family history of Breast cancer right!?

You think hmm I should probably get the Dr to check that before I have the baby.

You're in the Dr's office. She has a look and feel herself. She says “You're young, it feels like a simple cyst to me. I don't think it's anything to worry about.”

You think ohh phew! Great news.

6 months later that lump is really big now and obvious too, it's uncomfortable. You go back to the Dr's. This time she seems more worried. She sends you for an urgent ultrasound. They have a look and say they need to biopsy it.

It's cancer they tell you. Unfortunately it's spread to your lymph nodes.

Now picture this. You're heavily pregnant. In the shower you stumble across a lump in your breast as you're washing. Odd. You haven't noticed that before. You check regularly, so you definitely know your normal and you know with certainty that this is NOT NORMAL.

You think yes I definitely need to get the Dr to check that before I have the baby.

You're in the Dr's office. She has a look and feel herself. She says “You're young, it feels like a simple cyst to me. I don't think it's anything to worry about.”

But you know what's normal for you. You trust your gut instincts. Something just doesn't feel right about this. So you insist. You advocate for yourself like your life depends on it.

She agrees to send you for an ultrasound. They have a look and say they need to biopsy it to know for sure what it is.

It's cancer they tell you. BUT you caught it early. We can treat this. Treatment will still be hard, but you're going to be ok 🧡

Moral of the story… Know Your Normal. Check Your Bits regularly.
