Jacqui Sabin, Counsellor I am a qualified registered counsellor. (NZAC). Dunedin ,NZ I trained at Otago Polytech, Dunedin studying Bachelor of Social Services, majoring in Counselling.

I am a fully registered ACC provider for Sensitive Claims Service which provides counselling and supporting services for those impacted by mental injury caused by sexual assault. My lived experience of recovery from Post traumatic stress disorder, Major depressive disorder and anxiety disorder, (mental injuries) led me to graduate in 2019 with the aim of becoming a counsellor. My area of focus and

driver has been helping people who have experienced Intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual violence. The process of experiencing and reporting sexual assaults is harrowing and then begins the very long process in the judicial system. Many assume that a guilty verdict makes the victim feel better , it doesn't, a not guilty verdict does not mean innocence. It is an experience that is life altering on so many levels and one that is hard to come to terms with, just as it is with these cases. A 9 year 2 month sentence feels insignificant and insulting , as does the assumptions of the general public who , while well meaning , say things like " oh now you can move on" "you must be so happy " NO ! none of this makes victims of sexual assaults happy.
They are heartbroken and scarred forever by the actions of entitled people who believe they have a right to do what they want.

It is about time New Zealanders are better educated about these abusers, who lurk amongst us with the mask of normalcy.

It's good to look back and reflect on what it took to " just get through it"
No doubt you'll find significant personal growth from challenges with relationships, with yourself amd others.
Achievement looks different for all of us ,embrace your unique journey.

It doesn't always feel good , it can be sad, hard and sometimes filled with great love and hopes for the future.
