Last week some of our housing team attended the National Te Whatu Ora - Healthy Homes Initiative Hui at Pipitea Marae in Wellington.

We heard some amazing stories from around the motu and listened to some awesome initiatives being implemented within the HHI space.

To close off the hui, the final guest speaker was Dr Ashley Bloomfield. He spoke brilliantly and reiterated this quote a few times…

“People won’t remember what you did or what you said, they will remember how you made them feel” … “be kind”.

Curtain Call!!

Sign the petition to help make sure rental properties have curtains to hold in warmth for healthier homes.

Every year, tens of thousands of Kiwis are hospitalised with conditions made worse by cold, damp housing. The government has mandated insulation and heating but not curtains through the Healthy Homes Standards for rental properties. This is a problem because even in a well-insulated home, without cu...

Scott, Lucy and I have the privilege of attending the Reducing Energy Hardship Conference in New Plymouth.

We have spent the morning listening to lots of speakers, including Keri Brown - Chair of the Energy Hardship Expert Panel, speak on Energy Hardship, followed by a panel discussion with Wahina Toa.

We are about to start session 2 for the day, so will update this space later with some insights into what we discovered today ☺️

Aukaha and our Better Homes Programme was represented at the National Māori Housing Conference last week by our Otago Home Upgrade Programme Project Manager Scott Willis. Scott returned inspired by action in Rotorua and around the Motu: “We visited papakāinga housing projects and I loved Willie Te Aho’s story about getting homes built for his people in Te Whānau a Apanui and the response to Cyclone Gabrielle. It’s not only a question of affordability for whānau, its also a challenge to provide warm, cosy, healthy shelter in the climate crisis.”

Scott was also pleased to hear Associate Minister of Housing Davidson MP calling for “higher trust partnerships” between the Government and Māori on housing, something we’ve been advocating for at Aukaha. Meanwhile here in Ōtepoti Dunedin we know people are still living in cold, damp homes and we’re here to help through our Better Homes suite of programmes. Here’s a selection of snaps from the conference.

Our Otago Home Upgrade Programme is there for whānau, to increase wellbeing, fix problems and reduce costs. It is open to all Otago residents who own their own home and have a community services card.

We're already helping more than 80 whānau with home improvements and advice. So, we are pleased to show our Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority colleagues Gareth Gretton and Charlie Hands (seen here with Programme Manager Scott Willis) some of the results and meet whānau.

If you want to participate or know someone who would benefit, just email us at betterhomes@aukaha.co.nz and let us do the rest!
