Our amazing volunteer Bex from St Andrews care home in Dunedin was honoured recently by Volunteer South. We are so grateful for all our volunteers across PSO, we couldn't do it without them!

🌟 National Volunteer Week may have wrapped up, but our Celebration Stories are still going strong.

This week, we're highlighting Bex from St Andrews Home and Hospital in Dunedin. Her compassion and care shine through in everything she does. From supporting pamper afternoons to helping with bingo games, Bex brings warmth and connection to each visit.

She recently played a key role in a very special outing aboard the Seasider train. Thanks to her help, residents enjoyed a safe and joyful day filled with scenic views and shared memories. It was an experience they’ll treasure.

In Bex’s words: “If the residents are smiling when I leave, I know I’ve done something right.” 💛 The team at St Andrews couldn’t agree more.

This week we are thanking our volunteers who gift their time and energy to weave our community together!

Meet Colin, one of our wonderful volunteers from Iona care home in Oamaru. Colin supports one of our residents by lending a hand in the dining room. He also helps out with maintenance, and assists residents in our independent living cottages. Colin is just one example of how volunteering weaves people and communities together. Our volunteers are vital members of our teams and we are extremely grateful for their valuable time! Thank you, Colin and all our volunteers, for all that you do!

This week we are thanking our volunteers who gift their time and energy to weave our community together!

Meet Karen, a dedicated volunteer at Holmdene in Balclutha for over 12 years. “I retired from nursing one day, and pretty much came back the next as a volunteer.”

“Helping the residents live their best lives and getting to know the staff and relatives is wonderful,” she says.
From music and singing to a reminiscing group, Karen brings warmth, experience, and compassion to everything she does. Thank you Karen for all that you do!

This National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the amazing people who help weave our community together.

At Presbyterian Support Otago, over 500 volunteers give their time, heart, and energy across our nine Enliven care homes, shops, and Family Works services – from mentoring in the Buddy Programme, to supporting Stepping Stones, and packing food parcels.

Our theme this year is “Weaving the people together”, and that’s exactly what our volunteers do – bringing connection, care, and kindness wherever they go.

Thank you for being such an important thread in the PSO family. We are truly grateful – we couldn’t do it without you!

You help connect, support, and uplift – weaving people and communities together through kindness and service.

Recently residents at our Holmdene care home in Balclutha were treated to an outing to the Dahlia Gardens in Kaitangata, home to over 4,500 vibrant blooms!

Surrounded by birdsong from tūīs and bellbirds, we shared stories and afternoon tea in the peaceful garden. Residents explored quirky features tucked around the property, a beautiful duck pond, and even made friends with an adorable dog — which they would have loved to have taken home!

These outings mean so much to our residents, helping them connect with the community, but we need more volunteer van drivers to help make them happen!

🚐 We urgently need more volunteer van drivers at Holmdene!

If you or someone you know has a full licence and a few spare hours every week or fortnight, we would love to hear from you. 💛

If you can help, please contact Holmdene’s Manager, Stephenie Leith on 03 418 1468 or email
stephenie.leith@psotago.org.nz for more details.
